When my ex tried to use the whole I'm not going to work excuse to avoid paying child support, I got the judge to use potential income. She was ordered to pay based off what she could earn.

I went through this. The ex would deliberately try to put me in situations where I violated the order such as bringing my son into my work place. Best advice my lawyer ever gave me: when the court hearing happens, stand up and say this verbatim "I disagree with every claim she has filed but will agree to a mutual restraining order between us only. I just want to be able to see my son." I did that and sat down. It was then on her to prove her claims. She was not able to and the judge granted my r…

I bet. But even if you don't have one officially hired, simply saying you intend to hire counsel causes all hearings to shift until they are on record.

If you are being represented and he can't be there, the hearing has to be rescheduled. Let the judge know once your case is called.

I've gone pro se many times. I have faced experienced and brand new lawyers (yes my ex has had like 10). The spots where they would get me is knowing a the little laws within family court. So have your current attorney go over all the little nuances and rules that could trip you up, like how to properly write and file filings or enter evidence into the record. I've been a little lucky in that my judges have been slightly lax with me but they can only bend so much.
