I find that you can't treat people like babies. Agreed. Part of being an adult is expressing ourselves even when it's not what the other person wants to hear. "I don't want to hurt them" is another way of saying, "I'm afraid of how they'll react." I've had this problem too, so I know where OP is coming from, but there's no trick; you just have to say it: "I want to see other people." "You're a good person, but this isn't what I want right now." etc.

This is great advice that I intend to employ. My only problem is that I'm self-conscious about my apartment. It's pretty crappy for a guy in his 30s. It holds me back because I don't want to invite women over. I'm scared of that being like "what the fuck is a 35 yr old living in a place like this?" It's not a complete dump, but I seriously need to upgrade when I get the money. It's basically equivalent to a dorm room.

Because in the U.S. everyone is just so chatty and accustomed to talking with strangers, right? Actually, for many of us, it feels extremely unnatural to approach strangers, or even start casual conversations with people we don't know in coffee shops and such.
