Are you being intentionally dense? There is no benefit to having boring lackluster conversations with strangers, especially elderly people. I spent too much of my childhood around middle aged people and up because my parents would only let me socialize with people if they thought it’d help my career somehow despite being only a teenager, or even younger than that. Whereas there are many benefits for “the grind” when it comes to education, career, and physical health. Because these are straight f…

I mean what incentive is there for me to talk to someone if I can’t even expect a pleasant conversation? Like what’s the point? No one is going out to do something that isn’t enjoyable in anyway

I don’t think I’m gonna meet someone at the grocery store or at my gym. Where tf can you practice starting conversation without being judged for it? I’m not a fan of going to bars solo cause I’ve done it a bunch already. And tbh idk how people can do anything without expectations. Like I don’t expect sex, but is it really wrong to expect the conversation to go well?

Dive bars haven’t been a great place for meeting people in my experience. Same with music venues. Can’t say anything about sports leagues though since I never really was played team sports. And most meetups in my area are targeted towards old people or are trying to tell something.

Where do you meet people offline though? Especially if you live in a new city where you have no existing friend group. Pretty much most of my social interaction where I live since moving is from people I’ve met from dating apps. I’ve gone to random classes and meetups but they’re pretty bad for actual interaction people in a meaningful way since you’re mainly focused on whatever the task is.

That’s thing, most activities aren’t enjoyable for me if I’m doing it by myself. Only exceptions are stuff like skiing and hiking but that’s not exactly regularly accessible when you live in Manhattan and rely on the subway to go anywhere.

I mean getting an instrument and learning isn’t exactly cheap.

Problem is I can’t do those exciting things super often due to time constraints and expense. Skiing I can do like once a year. Boating is dependent on the season and can get expensive. Plus neither is great for meeting people.

I’m not going there to hit on girls I’m going to them to make friends. And yea of course I don’t find teams sports fun when I’m playing with people I don’t know and I’m not very good.

Ok but if I’m being honest, playing a rec sport, doing trivia, yoga, etc are all pretty boring. Like I’m not gonna be impressed by that. Plus I don’t think playing a rec sport with strangers if going to suddenly improve my life. After you’ve done real exciting things like skydiving, skiing, boating, etc it’s kinda hard to find stuff like pickleball or soccer exciting. Especially when it’s with people you don’t even know and it costs like 200 dollars to join a league. Also trivia is done with fri…

You’re also a woman so people are more open to talking and befriending you. I actually have to initiate if I want anything to happen. And in college it was basketball and a running club. Sucked at basketball so that didn’t help either. Where I currently live it’s like 200 dollars to join a sports league and it’s only for 6 games over 6 weeks, at least for pickle ball. I don’t think 6 45 minute matches that’ll mostly spent playing is enough to actually make friends. And if it doesn’t happen it’ll…

Ok but like where can you go to socialize with women as much as humanely possible? Especially after college. Yoga classes aren’t exactly bustling with conversations, same with coed sports leagues.

Way to intentionally misinterpret my comment. I literally said I was trying to make friends and still had nothing to show for it. Just shows how most advice women spew is BS unless you’re an attractive guy. Because they don’t understand they have the privilege of being wanted at basically any social venue just for being a woman where as men have to earn it.

Except of if had some success from online dating I doubt my behavior is the issue here. And no I don’t have any existing connections where I live. I would’ve used those if they existed obviously. I don’t really have any thing I’m passionate about. I weight lift 4 times a week and watch football but that’s about it. I also travel when I can. Most of the hobbies available in the city are boring though. Like table top gaming, volunteering, and martial arts feel so dull. I guess there’s a rave scene…

I’ve tried mingling with people at bars. I’ve literally done it multiple times this past week alone. Only people that are receptive are gay men who are trying to fuck or old men who want to someone to vent their life story too. Not exactly my audience. And how you look definitely plays a role tf? Like going to a bar alone and trying to unsuccessfully mingle for the 20th weekend in a row isn’t exactly a winning strategy for me. I never said I don’t want to, I have tried numerous times and it suck…

Ok? What do you mean I don’t want to? I’d like to enjoy but I don’t. I don’t get the positive interactions you do because I’m not attractive enough as a guy or that I wasn’t born a woman. I find it funny you can’t acknowledge the social privilege you have as a woman (also probably white). I’ll keep that in mind next time someone complains about “male privilege” that really only applies the elite class,

I’m not doubting that people who go out alone talk to people. But in that case, why have almost none of them ever been friendly with me hmm? Am I not good looking enough? Am I the wrong race? Maybe I should’ve been born a woman so my social skills wouldn’t be judged as harshly. And I think you’re overestimating how many people go out alone, yea a fair number do but most go with their friends.

Yea I’m not doubting that there are people that enjoy going to bars alone, but that’s because they’re usually women or attractive men. It’s a lot easier to keep going when you consistently get positive reinforcement when you do go. So I’m not surprised you have that opinion since you’re a woman. And of course that probably helps you sell your work to strangers at the bar.

Except I’ve taken all the stereotypical advice for making friends and it hasn’t worked. I’ve been going to meetups, volunteered, board game groups, art galleries, bars, etc and have jack shit to show for it. I’ve had more success from online dating than the irl approach which shows how bad said advice is. If doing all that shit doesn’t get results and I don’t enjoy it. What incentive is there to keep trying it? What’s the definition of insanity again?

Yea no shit drinking at home sucks. That’s why I’m saying people don’t just go to bars to drink. And yea I’m young and going to young people bars? Not exactly interested in meeting people old enough to be my parent’s age. I went to bars multiple times on my own in the last week , I’m not scared of it, it’s just boring and sad without friends. Again it’s easy for you because you’re a woman and don’t have to take the initiative or be as interesting. Plus you get a lot more grace during interaction…

They go to drink with FRIENDS. If people just wanted to drink by themselves they’d drink at home. And yea no one gives a fuck if a woman shows up by themselves. So of course you’d think that. No one is itching to talk to guys who showed up solo.

lol. Being alone in a bar is a lot different than being alone during a hike, the beach, or a museum. People go to the bar to hang out with their friends. And men are definitely viewed negatively for being at a club or bar by themselves. Plus you’re a woman, night life is literally catered to yall.

I generally never went out with just one friend. It was usually with groups of 3 or more so no one was really third wheeling if one went off to talk to a girl. But I feel like they have to lack awareness to not realize they’re cock blocking in some way. They seem needy

Well at least you’re a fairly unique ethnicity. I’ve met maybe 3 Kazakh people ever. I’m Indian, we aren’t exactly viewed favorably when it comes to dating. Plus there’s a fuckton of us. And tbh I don’t like concerts that much. In college I worked for a student run record label so I went to a lot of India rock concerts. Wasn’t really my thing. I’d talk to people at said events but it never really went anywhere. And idk for me it feels like it’s easier to talk to people on dead nights since it’s …

Ngl they seem like crappy friends if they cock block you. I can kinda see them slowing you down part depending on the situation but generally going with a group is a better look than going by yourself because of social proof and all. Unless all your friends are ugly/smelly or something.

They also stereotyped as being masculine so that probably helps. The representation in media and sports also probably helps

I moved recently for work and live in a new city. I have friends from grade school and college. But haven’t made any since graduating because I now live somewhere where I have no existing connection and also work full time. Plus My department only has 2 people my age who I’m not really interested in befriending. Quit trying to play arm chair psychologist. I like how you jumped straight to assuming I literally have no family or friends like bffr.

Going to bar by yourself just sucks period. I don’t mind making myself look good and going out in general. But if it’s just gonna end with me standing by myself at a bar with a 15 dollar cocktail there while everyone else is having a good time with their friend or SO there isn’t much incentive to keep trying.

He’s not average, he literally has women come up to him at concerts and bars. You’re not average if that’s happening to you.

Speaking from experience. Going to concerts, festivals, bars, etc by yourself isn’t productive. Yea it’s better than doing nothing but if you’re not super attractive and/or super outgoing it is not going to go well. Pretty much everyone goes there with friend groups and the venues tend to be loud so even having a conversation can be tough and going by yourself just feels sad. Also most ravers explicitly dislike when people try to have conversations during a rave because they’re explicitly there …

I mean your reply is about what I’d expect from a woman. You don’t really have to try to be accepted, being an even below average woman is enough. Your logic is the same logic that rich people use to justify why poor people are poor and why they themselves are rich, because “they deserve it” or “don’t work hard enough”.

I tried talking to like 3-4 different groups this past weekend didn’t go anywhere. And I don’t enjoy the outdoor activities because I have no one I like to do them with. Obviously people have fun doing whatever because they’re doing it with friends. But I don’t think a group of friends playing soccer is gonna be open to some random guy who can’t even play joining uninvited. Like I’m not gonna meet people just wondering through a park, trust me I’ve tried. Yea I talked to people at those venues, …

Ah yes, because random groups of people are totally going to be open to a random guy approaching them when they’re out and about. And I don’t care about frisbee or whatever, and if I do those things a just to meet people they can smell it out and it’ll come off as disingenuous according to people on here. Yea it’s easy af for you to meet people because you’re a girl, people will want you around just for that alone. Like I’ve gone to bars, art Galleries, museums, and parks by myself so many times…

I’ve been on like 13 dates in the last year form dating apps. The best result was two of them were one night stands. Never got a second date though. My hobbies are the gym and video games. Not exactly the best places for meeting people. I go to the park sometimes but people aren’t exactly itching to talk to a guy that’s there by themself. Same goes for any other venue like a bar, museum, etc.
