Hey, I just had those ideas, so I'm not too worried if they're a bit off right now. That's why I posted this, to find out more. Anyway, I don't think it's rooted in genetics. As I said, I come from r-type thinking myself. Come to think of it I was raised pretty K, then switched to r in my youth and am now switching back to K, so I completely agree that it's not genetic. I even think a person can apply r strategies in one area and K in another. Those are just strategies. I also agree everything h…

Yes, Ks have an advantage, but there's a danger I see in having a moral code inhibit your usage of those advantages. What good is a tool if you don't use it? That's what the rs understand that the Ks do not. They use everything, screw personal morals or not. I'm sure not every K person thinks this way. But I see a lot of people here - especially people coming from the conservative side - being effectively hindered by this. Have you seen that documentary about the US officer in Afghanistan talkin…

Here's a technique I've found recently, and it seems to work really well, give it a shot and see if it works for you. When we have emotions coming up, we usually think of two ways to deal with them: acting on them or suppressing them. However, there's a third way that is neither. This third way is simply watching them. Take a bit of time out, lie down on your bed or whatever, and simply let this need come up. Find out how exactly it feels on the level of sensation. That means: pressure, pain, te…

If you go to the Facebook page of Sebastion Kurz and read the comments of Germans there - you would think Jesus had returned in the flesh. But I don't blame them, I share the feeling. Finally a reason to be proud of my country. Anyway, welt.de seems to be quite ok, they're reporting rather neutrally as far as I've seen. I hope something happens soon in Germany. In Austria we were in the exact same situation, and Faymann was Merkel's sock puppet for the longest time. But I guess our opposition (F…

The European attitude toward firearms and revolution is also bewildering. Don't worry, this is changing fast. I spoke to a weapons dealer last week, right now it's hard to get weapons and ammo because people are stockpiling like crazy.

Well, our Aussenminister managed to take care of the worst for now (seriously, I'm so glad we have this guy, he might have single-handedly saved Central Europe, if the borders hold). I just hope he can defend the closed borders once we have the first dead migrants at the Macedonian border. And we need to support the Macedonian (and Albanian) border fast. I just hope you guys can get rid of Merkel soon enough, before Algeria explodes as well. This is going to get so much worse, and the worst thre…

Look at all that hamstering in the articles about why women fall in love with criminals. Yeah, I saw this story in the news here yesterday. This guy is in prison for 37 years for murder and multiple robberies, has refused to participate in any resocialization programs, so he's never gotten out on probation. So he sues the Republic of Austria for not letting him out early. He's 67 now, by the way. So far, so meh. But I've left out one crucial detail: his attorney argues that the guy could move in…

His definitions are as follows: There's samadhi (stable attention) and sati (mindfulness). So the former is a measure of how good you are at focusing your attention on the meditation object, while the latter is your awareness, as far as I understand it. You need both for achieving vipassana and samatha, which he defines as follows (pg. xx in the introduction): Samatha has five characteristics: effortlessly stable attention (samadhi), powerful mindfulness (sati), joy, tranquility, and equanimity.…

Oh yeah, I definitely want to do a retreat this year. And I don't care about others, as you said you can just be there and do your thing, that's my plan. Or, what I'm also thinking about is just camping a few days up in the mountains. Haven't decided yet. Different meditation techniques have different goals. Yeah, he writes about that and, from what I can tell, he's not a fan of the idea. He describes this as a bird that only has one wing, and so his approach is to teach both vipassana and samat…

It's still difficult for me the understand exactly what problem meditation is supposed to solve. Attention is like a spotlight. You can shine it on anything in your environment, your own body or in your own consciousness (like a thought for example). Right now your attention is probably on this comment, but you can shift it to your toe or the ceiling. Attention can also get captured by something (there are actually three different ways this can happen, but I'm not going to go into detail here). …

What did you actually do in your meditation? Even over the last year when I wasn't meditating with an actual plan, I never got bored, instead I kept enjoying the distractions that popped up (like old memories and suppressed pains resurfacing, insights occurring to me, or just spontaneous heightened awareness of my surroundings). I had to sometimes force myself to sit, but once I did it was never boring. However, what I've learned so far from the book is that just blindly following those distract…

I've written about this book in another comment, but here is the link again. I started reading this recently and it's simply the one single book you need. It's an actual, proper manual from beginning to highly advanced meditation. No other book comes even close to it. I can't recommend it high enough.

Meditate Just a quick recommendation: I just bought this book and started reading it recently. And I can already say: everybody who wants to optimize their time investment in meditation has to read this book. Meditation has its perks, even without knowing what to do exactly. I did this for a year now. But ... There's a difference between doing 40 pushups a day and doing a proper full-body barbell training program. This book is that full-body training program for meditation. It's an actual manual…

they "think" they are all like ronda rousey Man, I was so happy when Holly Holm beat her, seriously. Do you know those rare moments when you feel like the universe actually sometimes is just, and that the right things sometimes do happen? That fight was one of those moments. There's just something about Rousey that always struck me as off. The fact that there's so little competition for her got to her head, as well as all the guys constantly talking about how stunning and beautiful she is (which…

"fighting in the nhl should be banned"... lol I don't see anything wrong with that. In fact, I think it should go even further. Look at the UFC, for example. Barbaric doesn't even begin to describe it. Why do they have to beat the shit out of each other? Can't they just talk about their feelings like adults? Reach a compromise? And then both can have a belt at the end, it's called win-win. Rename the whole thing into "Ultimate Friendship Championship." I mean ... it's 2016, come on already!

It's interesting that you can see her smile just oh so shortly when she shows the letter. She enjoys every second of attention she gets. I bet she's already thinking about how to get herself into a reality show. Oh, and that fake grin in her med school photo is enough for my flight response to trigger. I'm checking orf.at daily for news, since the layout is very friendly for scanning the headlines. And I've noticed that there must be a couple of people towing the SJW party line there as well, since some of the SJW terms I've learned over the last year are leaking out into the wild. Really fascinating. The media and a portion of politics (the greens of course and a part of the social democrats) is clearly following the dogma imported from the american SJWs and it's apparent once you know what t…

emotions and body language are tied together Yeah, exactly. That's the thought that led me there. It doesn't make any sense to smile if happiness is just an internal state, or to release tears if sadness is just an internal state. It also makes no sense that we can read and mirror emotions so effortlessly (even with lots of other mammals) if they're just internal communication of an individual. But once you think of it as a built-in low-level communication system it makes perfect sense.
/r/TheRedPill02/02/16 04:17 PM

it's how the subconscious communicates with the conscious Lately I've started entertaining the idea that emotions are in fact an older communication system in animals (primarily mammals) that humans still carry around, since evolution never throws stuff out. We just think that it's our subconscious communicating with us, when it's actually trying to communicate with other animals in the herd.

radical individualism would require nobody ever 'ganging up' (2 people working together), which is not how we evolved and progressed Oh yes, absolutely. We are a social species, and our success depends on collaboration. This is how we became the top of the food chain. But collaboration works only if most people submit to a leader and everybody pulls in the same direction, and this inevitably means conflict, politics and internal struggle for leadership. There's no way out. I guess evolution some…

I don't think there's a way to make this work. If you have an idea that is genuinely helpful to others, you still need to have power over others to implement this idea. There are different ways to do that, from education to violence, but in the end you need to be and stay in charge in some form or another. You can't enlighten the people if you stay in your mountain cave and meditate all day. But unless everybody thinks and believes exactly the same thing there will always be others who have othe…

But it does suck you in, so you have to be careful. Yeah, had two good friends of mine sucked into it. People should read up on what happened, Srila Prabhupada got allegedly poisoned by his followers because of internal politics in the movement. So in the end it turned into yet another cult built around good intentions. This is the thing with religions: they all start with a core of truth that some guy figured out (and which probably already was a mixture of good and stupid from the very beginni…

it should be really called freeze, flight or fight In this book I've seen it called the "4F response" - fight, flight, freeze or fawn. Fight: Pretty obvious, you attack the aggressor Flight: Obvious as well, you run away Freeze: You play dead, hoping the aggressor goes away Fawn: You try to appease the aggressor (classic nice guy!) I think it makes a lot of sense to include this fourth response in the mechanism.

I know what you mean, but I'm pretty sure that'll change. I know that officially everybody tows the party line, but when people are alone and no foreigners are around and they trust each other, it's all about "das wird man ja wohl noch sagen dürfen." And I'm noticing more and more people start voicing their opinions on Facebook, people publicly supporting the right wing parties without shame, thanks to all the things that are happening. Not a German, but Austrian - pretty much the same culture though, so I think this is generally valid in the German speaking world except Switzerland (who were smart enough to not open their borders in the first place). Public opinion was already turning, this has been going on for a few months. Back in August-September there was a genuine "all are welcome" euphoria, but once people started seeing who was coming over the borders, that euphoria fizzled out and turned into a tentative uneasiness. G…

Help me people, I feel like shit, complete, utter, total failure. First step is to accept that. You think like you need to control how you feel. But that's not true. It's also not possible. Your feelings are a sense like sight or hearing. You can't control what you experience through your eyes or your ears. In the same sense you can't control what you experience through your emotions. They tell you things about the state of the world. Treat them as valuable information. If you see a gun pointed …

Have you ever seen one of those Indian guys riding their elephants? That's you. Seriously, I think this metaphor goes a long way to understand what's going on in the mind. You are that little guy (the neocortex, i.e. your rational mind), sitting on top of this huge elephant (your limbic system, i.e. your emotions and automatic behaviors), trying to ride it and tell it where to go. What happens when the elephant goes crazy? What can you do about it? Well, not much, really. The elephant is much bi…

Think about your heartbeat. It's something that runs sort of automatically, doesn't it? You don't have any control over it, yet your heart still beats. Notice how you can observe your heart beat, but you can't control it. Now think about breathing. Most of the time it runs automatically, like the heart beat. You can, however, take over your breathing and also let go of control again. So here we have something that we can both observe and control. There are lots of examples of actions that we do …

I think of it this way: (1) A personality is the sum of its habits, and habits are the sum of individual decisions. So if you are a "bad" person, you will have a habit of making poor individual decisions. It's almost absurd how simple this is, but that's what makes it so hard. Because we're creatures of habit and we're very used to making "bad" decisions. (2) Everything you experience (see, hear, touch, feel, every taste, every emotion, every tree, every bird, every other person) actually is ins…

No. The word Buddhism refers to two kind of related but still different things: one is the cultural phenomenon, the religion that is known as Buddhism. This is what most people know as Buddhism, and that's many things to many people. Some Buddhists believe in gods, some don't, some in reincarnation, some don't, etc. etc. What the other posters (I guess) are referring to (at least what I refer to when I use the word) is not this cultural phenomenon, but a set of guidelines and techniques for sort…

I'm not familiar with the American school system, so maybe I've worded that wrong. Here in Austria everything up to uni is called "school", I was 19 at the time, I guess you call it differently in America. Most of the single men I know have giant heaps of both of those two. This reminds me - back in school, when I got called into the principal's office, and he asked [paraphrased]: "Well, you're so intelligent, why don't you do as we say?" I was intelligent enough to not answer: "Well, I don't do as you say because I'm so intelligent." But I sure as hell was thinking it. I'm constantly surprised by the sheer unawareness of some people. I agree. However, what I mean isn't so much about our current situation in this society, I'm thinking of a more general theme in humans, like our basic innate strategies that are given to us by our biological programming. It's basically the same as "men age like wine, women like milk", but framed in a different, in my opinion more useful way. First of all: up until puberty we're just children. We don't really have that much agency and we follow the path laid out by our caregivers. After puberty …

She must have just thought being in shape for guys just comes naturally with no effort, because all she had to do to stay hot was not eat like a pig and stay thin. A lot of things I read on here contradict each other I think that's just the nature of a forum with a diverse group of users. The "is" part is really, really helpful and there's not a lot of contradiction in that I find. The "should" part however is another story, there's all kinds of wildly differing opinions on what you should do after you accept the "is" part. I find it best to learn as much about the "is" part as I can and make up the "should" part for myself.

gorilla warfare I remember it still as if it were today. The air was cold and wet. The mountain loomed over us, its top hidden in clouds, fog hugging its steep flanks. Just a heads up a more accurate sound to the ü would be words with the silent e placed after the letter u e.g. 'cute', 'rebuke', or 'dude' I am actually a native German speaker, so ... nope. That would be very funny to hear if English speakers actually pronounced those words with an "ü", everybody would sound like East Germans. All your examples sound like the regular German "u" (not the umlaut), like in "Mut", "Ruhe", "Gudruns Hutschnur", etc. Those are exactly the same "u" sounds as in "dude."…

Well, actually ... it's Münchhausen. "u" -> "butcher" "ü" -> "lyrics" The complete word would be pronounced somewhat like "Mynk-House-En" (using a "k" instead of "ch", since that consonant doesn't exist in English). There's this myth about a tree where for every human being there's a branch, and on each branch hangs a strand that contains all the sorrow this person will experience in life. A spirit takes you there and you can decide to switch out your strand with anybody else's. Everyone who goes there decides - after looking at all the other strands - to keep their own. Energy appears because you want it to all the time. Its called adrenaline. It's important not to conflate the different meanings of the word. Energy as defined scientifically is the capacity of a system to do work (where work has a precisely defined meaning as well). It's really funny ... I wrote a reply only to realize at the very end that I'm just talking about the meaning of words. Because: the trigger for the fight-flight response doesn't have to be an external situation. It can be an internal emotion or a certain state of mind. This is especially true for children who come out of abusive families or were raised by narcissistic parents, for example. I know you mean well, but this is actually bad advice if given unconditionally. Especially with severe anxiety you can get to a point where this normalization won't happen anymore (it's called HPA axis dysregulation). One well known example for this is PTSD. Exposure to the stressor won't necessarily help in this case, it's very likely to make the person even worse, since he's re-traumatizing himself. You can't simply throw a vet with PTSD back into combat until he's "fixed." And this dysregulat…

Our instincts and biology were developed and refined before civilization in small, nomadic hunter-gatherer societies, the majority of our existence. I think it's important to realize that those instincts developed even before we were human; that's tens of millions of years of evolution that our social behavior has gone through (if you think of that in terms of development of the limbic system). It's not easy, and it won't happen overnight, but you have plenty of time to do that. And you also need to take a good look at how you treat yourself, because you've just spent a lot of tim…

CyanogenMod for Android phones has this feature built in since CM12 I think. I use f.lux on all my PCs and CM on my phone, and it really makes a difference.

Has anybody here seen Outlander? The book behind it is written by a woman, and it's another fascinating look into the female psyche. I lost interest in it now, because it all got a bit much, but nevertheless you can see a lot of the stuff TRP talks about. Here's a couple of things (spoilers!): She gets thrown back in time ~200 years and arrives in this world completely alone. What happens next? Of course all the men are starting to fight over her. She's an oh so poor victim that isn't allowed to…

Yeah, I don't get that either. TRP is simply a bunch of awesome free information that you can read, think about and then do whatever the hell you want with it. It's not like someone's pointing a gun to your head forcing you to lift, be confident and f-close. And ultimately we're not so different. We're all somehow dealing with the realization that we've been lied to all our life. Angry TRPers go on and try to fuck as many girls as possible: "Fuck that, I'm getting even!" Angry MGTOWs sulk in the…

I had a perfect childhood I don't want to argue against that, because it very well might be true, but this sentence is often a red flag that there was something wrong in childhood and a person is still rationalizing that away. It might be worth it for you to actually investigate this claim. If you indeed had a perfect childhood then your investigation will turn out fine, but if there were problems you can't see at the moment then it's good to bring them to the surface. I can tell you from my own…

I've recently found an interesting way of looking at this: we've got millions of years of animal evolution in us, and we experience this as emotion. Everything our emotions tell us is geared toward survival and reproduction. This hurts, I'm hungry, I'm scared, I'm horny, I like this, I'm exhausted. This is our inner animal communicating with us. So "negative" emotions are basically just signals that something's not right. And "positive" emotions are signals that we're doing fine. So if we're fee…

Haha, I know that feeling too well. There's a YouTube channel I found recently that expands a lot on the psychology behind why we become people pleasers and grow up with boundary issues, I think it's definitely worth checking out. Sometimes he can get a bit new agey, so take it with a grain of salt, but overall the stuff on narcissism and CPTSD he talks about was at least as eye opening to me as NMMNG.

I've struggled with depression for a loooong time. People have already recommended lifting. Really important and it definitely helps against depression. And therapy is something important too, it helped me a lot, especially at the beginning, to climb out of the hole. Once you're going it's easier to keep the momentum, but the first steps are definitely easier with help. Anyway, another thing that greatly helps with depression is meditation, just head over to /r/Meditation and take a look. It's s…

Now that you made me think about the title I've noticed something. I find it even more interesting that it's "Health at Every Size" instead of health at every weight. I've never noticed before how the word size has completely replaced the word weight.

This is absolutely true in my case as well. I'm not huge, started working out two years ago, but I'm at a point where it's clearly visible that I have some muscle on my bones. I've been practically invisible before, I'm not anymore. Now I feel like women are starting to actively try to be pleasant towards me. One of the most mind blowing experiences is how I get treated differently by female retail stuff. They're so much friendlier, pleasant and helpful than before. I get so much more smiles it'…

There's this story I heard once, sorry that I don't know the details any more, so I can't really google it, but I remember the important part, so here we go: A company tried to sell some instant dough mix or something like that, back in the 50ies or 60ies. They thought it would be a hit because it saved the women so much time and effort in the kitchen. But the product didn't sell at all, so they made some focus groups to find out why. Turns out, the women felt guilty about using this dough mix b…

that is going to sacrifice ten years of extra life due to the stress of working hard enough to keep you fed, housed, clothed, and entertained Are there actually any studies that compare life expectancy of married vs. unmarried men?

You're adding as much value to this discussion as a grammar nazi does. This is really off topic, but I simply have to comment on that. One of the reasons why I'm hanging out on Reddit is to improve my English (my native language is German). And so far I think this has worked quite well, in no small part thanks to countless grammar nazis that have pointed out errors to me. Without them I'm sure I'd still make tons of its/it's errors and stuff like that. Especially in a sub that's about self impro…
