While it certainly could all be true, remember that people lie. I don't believe anyone's sob stories, I've been lied to far too often. Agreed, I wouldn't give money out blindly to someone on the street. In my case though, this particular encounter took place in a professional setting where I was able to access the patient's information so I know that the majority of what he told me was true.
