Thanks for that level of detail in your argumentation. I only wish I could upvote you twice. Can you recommend some source(s), specifically for the inadvertent effects? I recently read the Wikipedia article about this, which painted a less bleak picture, but I also got the impression that not much research has been done - which is quite typical for sexual and other "taboo" issues.

Actually, no, I wasn't aware of that; I'm not American and our laws are, afaik, different. Anyway, my comment was entirely meant in the context of full-blown rape, not, shall we say, inappropriate touching.

While I'm not suggesting that your wife's cousin is necessarily wrong, I'd like to point out a reason why law enforcement officers might perceive an alledged rape victim as being untrustworthy.
