I do voluntary work that means I often talk to people who are depressed and suicidal. I'm not depressed or suicidal myself. But I can empathise with their feelings and work with them to find a result that works for them. You don't have to be a woman to empathise with women's equality issues.

I once held the door open for a female colleague, who refused to go through the door. Instead she berated me for patronising her. I asked her if she was in a bad mood and was on her period. She was outraged. I then pointed out that this was patronising behaviour, not holding open a door, which I'd do for any human being, regardless of gender.
