Some are, and the way a lot of people play them they are, but they can also be powerful mediums for stories. They can teach strategy and planning methods, (civilization games) organization, ( RTS or MMOs) time management, resource management, observation skills, reflexes, spacial thinking (tetris), etc. Many games have several of these elements. Amherst is only about the colleges. There's nothing else there. You seem to be set on MA specifically. I would only ever live in one of the suburbs of Boston or else in Boston proper. Some things to keep in mind are that the weather blows and the people are very blunt and confrontational. It's a very different atmosphere than Texas or California, for example.
