It is certainly better to have the option to say no than get an unwanted kiss planted on you, leaving the situation much more uncomfortable. Communication is absolutely key, again why I am in favor of asking first. The Doppler/dahmer mention was to liken the perception of whichever action you take (ask for a kiss or just go for it) potentially being perceived as either creepy or cute. It’s sweet, and shows respect and consideration of her feelings.
