Sometimes relationships just run their course, maybe it’s possible for you to one day move on to being friends and coparents without the emotional baggage. I see that with friends who have tried hard to get past the pain of divorce and show their kids they are the priority for both parents. After the dust settles, which can take a while, they move on to a new phase of their relationship as coparents who get along OK.

Does she have a 401(k)? Retirement assets are generally looked at all together and split in half.

MLMs are so predatory and they really target SAHMs. They get them hooked on the culture and socializing. Jesus, if she can sell that shit insurance she should just sell regular insurance.

I need that haddock in butter cream sauce recipe, please!!! I’ll trade you for my Classic Ceviche recipe (kind of out of season now but this is a HUGE hit in the summer). Oh yeah, it’s not really mine, it’s Food and Wine’s but it’s delicious. https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/classic-ceviche

In my 40s and I have to say life just gets better- I have more money, freedom, friends, travel. My husband and I have hit a rocky patch but we’re working through it and we may or may not decide to stay married but we’re still best buddies. The only thing that sucks is you start to lose people more. Some of my friends have lost their parents and mine are starting to slow down. I started to really feel great about myself in my 30s. I wish I could go back and have the body I had in my 20s (which at…

I would think there probably aren’t any hard and fast rules around this, I would guess there are guidelines and then the specific case would be considered. I think you should call an immigration lawyer and ask them for a referral to a divorce lawyer or for a consultation. Sounds like a very tough situation, good luck and do what’s best for the kids and hope for the best?

I think you could ask around locally for recommendations or just call your local divorce attorneys and ask them if they could help you and how much they would charge. That's what I did, I called 2, explained the situation, they both thought what my spouse and I had agreed on was fair and balanced, and offered to review the paperwork and file for a reasonable fee (one was $3600, one was $2400). Both were very nice and non-combative (one was a woman, one was a man, and they both recommended each o…

It sounds like you put women on a pedestal and then are disappointed when they turn out to be real people with flaws. I assure you the younger sister is not perfect and you’d be sick of her shit at some point in your life too. I would get some professional help stat, or you’re going to spend your life disappointed. You mention your wife “got a baby” from your marriage, focus on being a great dad.

I’m in the middle of starting my own practice so I’m not taking clients at the moment but I would suggest starting off with NAPFA (the National Association of Fee-Only Financial Planners). There is a search feature on their website that will help you find a local advisor (NAPFA.org). They don’t sell products for commission and are usually very up front about what you get for what you pay. I would also immediately subscribe to the Dave Ramsey podcast (he gets a little OTT crazy christian but his …

Good for you! I changed careers to be a financial advisor after seeing how many people have no clue how to save/invest for the future and it is very fulfilling (but very very hard). I want to do educational premarital counseling so people understand what they are getting into before they get married. It’s great to help people though, and you may not be able to save everyone but you’ll be able to make a difference. I think you should do it for sure.

I loved my Betta! They need a heated tank, by the way- I always had mine in a bowl then joined the Betta subreddit and learned how much happier they were when they are properly cared for. Mine went from a pale, sad little dude with droopy fins to a feisty, turquoise and purple badass. He would interact with me every day when I fed him and he loved it when I would come downstairs in the morning and turn on the kitchen lights. I didn’t know they take care of the nest and eggs. What a great tip and…

I highly recommend Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University or read his book The Total Money Makeover. It’s very digestible, actionable steps to take control of your finances and build wealth for the future. You can attend a class at a church or do it online. I’m not religious so I just ignored all the bible thumping parts and took away the action items. That will give you knowledge and a sense of control over your money. Get as much time with your daughter as possible and make it quality time. …

I would just separate your accounts as soon as possible, pay all the household bills and give her a set, reasonable amount for groceries/clothing/kids expenses and document it. Close any joint credit cards and bank accounts if you can. I don’t think you can get any of the spent money back and as long as there isn’t like toxic mold or something no one is going to care. I guess it depends on what state you’re in. I’m just going to chime in that in the long run you’ll be better off. There’s a such …

Oh my friend, you have emotional abuse happening here. I would go to counseling yourself and go from there.

Stretch distributions in IRAs (both Roth and Traditional) for non-spouse beneficiaries is no longer available under current tax plan. Double check with your accountant but you will have to take RMDs (Required Minimum Distributions) over the next 10 years. The firm where the account is held should be able to explain it in more detail for you.

I’ve been hearing good things about Stitch Fix for men. Maybe try that out?

Things will get better. I don’t think there is any shame in a marriage reaching the ends of its course. Hang in there!

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Ask around for a good attorney who deals with military divorces and find out what it could look like so you at least know what you’re facing. Sometimes knowing the likely practical stuff will help calm you down and let you approach things rationally. It’s more than likely you and your wife will share custody vs. one of you have him all the time. Go download some books on divorce geared towards men, take a deep breath, and get prepared. You’ve got this.

It sounds to me like she’s really enmeshed with her family. I love my family and we’re close, live in the same town, and we till only see each other/talk to each other once a week. I think you’re right, you weren’t given a chance to start your own family because she’s so involved with hers. This may work out better for you in the long run. Good for you for standing up to them about not spending every weekend and risking your health during a pandemic. I hope things work out for the best for you!
