I think the fact that 'ghosting' culture is so normalized is kind of a point against your assertion that most people 'have' basic human decency. It isn't decent. In fact it is one of the most harmful actions you can take against another person. The rejection or cutting-off of communication is happening, no matter what, but ghosting prolongs that pain on the other party.

I assume that you probably have, by now, had enough conversations where you can predict the possible outcomes (including the negative / harassment outcomes) you are concerned about. So, instead of ghosting, couldn't you just copy-paste some kind of closing response and / or block the person if you are especially concerned about harassment? I don't think that should require that much additional effort or investment?

I can understand that there are many disrespectful people out there, but is this a policy which you enact on everyone? Or just people who have 'proven' themselves to be disrespectful? Have you ghosted people who haven't been outright rude and disrespectful, but it still 'felt bad' to tell them that you weren't interested in continuing the conversation anymore due to lack of interest?
