Depends on what one means by hedonism. The epicureans advocated a life of pleasure, but what they meant by that has been obscured a bit by time. Epicurus believed that what he called "pleasure" (ἡδονή) was the greatest good, but that the way to attain such pleasure was to live modestly, to gain knowledge of the workings of the world, and to limit one's desires. This would lead one to attain a state of tranquility (ataraxia) and freedom from fear as well as an absence of bodily pain (aponia). The…

I am anti-political correctness.! No, you just have a different version of it. You feel personally attacked because a protagonist is not the gender or race you want them to be. If a person in your protected race or gender is portrayed in a negative light, you take it as an attack on all white men, and on yourself. This is exactly like a plus-size Tumblrina screeching about cultural appropriation.

I do feel that white men are unfairly demonized You're advocating for identity politics and your own version of political correctness. If content creators or franchise owners can't change the gender or race of their characters without you feeling attacked or excluded or marginalized, that's identity politics. They want to appeal to a broader audience, so they're doing what they think will be conducive to that end. They may lose the "white genocide!!!!" crowd, but that also may not be the worldvi…

Writers might want to appeal to a wider audience. There is a growing awareness that women too consume SF media, and the target audience is not confined to dudes. They're going to lose some audience, but they also lose some audience by even having non-white protagonists. But if this sub starts getting overrun by people complaining about "white genocide," I'm out. But I have the power to just not watch media that doesn't interest me, whether because I think the message is too heavy-handed, or the …

Calling it hypocrisy dignifies it too much. They just lack self-awareness. Many have tried to point out the absurdity and dishonesty of the situation, but the market for "quit yer bullshit" is much smaller than the market for "women are ungrateful whores and it's feminism's fault."

Boys will be boys, and girls will be girls, no matter what That's largely why I shy away from the incessant blaming of everything on women and feminism. I also think it comes down to how strong your libido is. It's not about theory or content or argument. If you have a strong sex drive, or a strong desire for a relationship, that's where you're going to end up. There's no value in jeering at men who are "one BJ away from going back." I'm not this way because of a MGTOW creed or some MGTOW video.…

basically, plot devices for this heroes journey True also for Taken and any number of other movies. A staple male fantasy is of being a badass, Conan, whatever. But without the pretext of being a defender, you come off as a predator. But we want to retain our positive self image, and you can't plausibly aspire anymore to rape, pillage, and plunder the other tribe. So there has to be a gross injustice done for the fantasy version of you to avenge, a viable pretext by which you can indulge in gros…

People sometimes get overenthusiastic and hyperbolic. We also hear about a "war on Christmas" every year, lest we forget. And Obama was supposedly coming for our guns, about to put Christians in FEMA camps, suspend the election, all kinds of things. But yeah, many do think that Kavanaugh signals the end of Roe v Wade, and it may not end there. Griswold v. Connecticut, Lawrence v. Texas, or even Obergefell v. Hodges could be up for grabs. And I think we'll find, as we so often have, that many of …

Of course Roe will be challenged. Some red states will further restrict abortion, or just ban it outright, hoping they get sued and it makes its way to the SCOTUS. And as /u/goatismycopilot points out, Roe has already been heavily curtailed anyway. Incidentally overturning Roe explicitly wouldn't make abortion illegal coast to coast. It would only happen in some strongly red states, and even then that might only last until their next election. That is of course unless the SCOTUS rubber-stamps th…

I'd say it's the best time in history to be just about anyone, unless you're someone who would've otherwise been actual royalty. And even then, a case could be made. 200 years ago my ancestors were essentially peasants. I would've spent my life more than likely illiterate, working as a laborer in agriculture (as did almost everyone), in a rural area with very little access to education, books, etc. I wouldn't get any travel unless I was conscripted/impressed into someone's army or navy to be can…

The mainstream will always look with suspicion on those who have dropped out. As Aristotle said, “Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god. ” Yet even those who think they are self-suffi…

I've always been sympathetic to ascetics, hermits, monks, etc. I've wondered for a while whether everyone who chose those paths did so from religiosity, or sometimes because the religious path was the only one that would give them license to drop out. I've seen men who lived minimalist, solitary lifestyles but with no religious trappings labeled "weirdos," while someone else with the same lifestyle but a picture of Buddha on the wall is lauded as "spiritual." You get a lot more leeway if you cou…

I didn't say it was "just as bad." I was using the examples to illustrate why a private entity might be wary of associating themselves with a certain space of ideas. And the MGTOW 1.0 forum had been overrun by RPers that many consider toxic, Incel-lite at least, and to a certain extent also the alt-right.

it is just quite disheartening to think about What is? Private entities have every right, both legally and ethically, to do what Reddit is doing. Few if any are actually indiscriminate advocates of free expression. Nor can we be. If you ran a private server overrun by Neo-Nazis or NAMBLA enthusiasts or whatnot, at some point you would reflect that your money and property were being used to propagate these views. And you would be seen as someone who is propagating these views, complicit in these …

If it can happen there, you know it can happen here. It could already happen here. Reddit is a for-profit company. Their servers are private property. They are not legally or ethically obligated to give anyone a platform for their views. Many of these subs that have been quarantined or removed themselves banned people with dissenting viewpoints.

You are of course free to curate your space as much as you like. Just don't forget that you yourself may exhibit someone else's red flags. I definitely have things I look out for, but I also want people in my life who disagree with me, push me, even dislike me. I need to be called on my bullshit. It's the only way I can hope to become smarter. And that, at least to me, entails putting up with people I might otherwise rule out. What is of value can be found elsewhere. TRP is primarily, at least to my eyes, anger and resentment. Even if something has non-zero value, if the signal-to-noise ratio is low enough, it isn't worth the effort to wade through.

I don't watch TV. For news, I skim the relevant subreddits, skim Google News, and if I want depth I look at the Wikipedia current events portal. I spend more of my time reading books. The downside is that I don't know the latest shows, so there is less to talk about with people around me. Sometimes I'll hear about a series that sounds interesting, so I want to know what the fuss is about, and BitTorrent could hypothetically serve a gentleman's needs in that domain. Same with movies. Drawing. Tons of free lessons online, particularly if you start with the fundamentals (drawabox.com) and then move to Youtube or other online tutorials. You don't have to be an artist--many people try to learn to draw just as a skill, to communicate ideas. Also considering just learning as a hobby. Whether your interest be history, math, science, programming, whatever, there are resources where you can start at the basics and work yourself to an arbitrary level of expertise.

I think some MGTOW guys give themselves too much credit for their situation being a product of their intelligence or rationality. In my opinion (which is of course just an opinion) you aren't going to go this way if your sex drive is strong or you find women really attractive. La Rochefoucauld said something to the effect that we like to credit ourselves with resisting our passions, when in reality our passions were just weak enough to be resisted. Confirmation bias is a problem, though, as is the availability bias. Literacy rates, education rates, etc are going up, not down. GDP per capita is going up, not down. There was plenty of crap and drama generated in years past as well, but didn't get preserved. Regarding usage of smartphones and social media, they can be controlled. I can't buy it. In my (entirely unqualified, non-expert) opinion, MGTOW and RP are entirely opposing philosophies, not graduations along a continuum. RP is TRADCON, and most of those guys want the traditional gender roles. MGTOW is, dare I say it,feminist, in the sense that it rejects (or at the very least question) traditional gender roles. It rejects the notion that men should aspire to be, or be content to be, providers or protectors, or even to define ourselves by our success (or lack thereo…

I basically just do not understand. I'm 48, and things have... changed, shall we say. I can't say we didn't watch anime, since in truth Speed Racer was anime, and I grew up on it. But when "men were men" (TM) we were supposed to keep up appearances, and some interests/predilections/idiosyncrasies were best left to the private domain. But the 'problem' may be less the new freedom to indulge these idiosyncrasies, and more that the old way (TM) was overly restrictive and neurotic and, though I thin…

I'm saying that conservative Christianity doesn't have much of an influence over the "commanding heights" social/cultural institutions of America as a whole Neither does a screechy women's studies professor no one would've heard of if conservatives weren't up in arms over them. Whereas Backwater Baptist Church I wouldn't be so dismissive. However comforting it may be for you to dismiss the power that conservative Christianity has over rural culture, how it dominates the dialogue and gets to normalize what can be said, the power is still there. No, I get what you're saying. I grew up in rural Texas, a safe space for conservative Christian beliefs and narratives. Rural white Christians, though they are the dominant cultural force throughout most of America, think of themselves as the perpetual victims, even going so far as to convince themselves that they are hated merely for being white, western, and Christian. So I understand persecution complexes, the claiming of victimhood as a way of exerting power, etc. We see the "War on Christma…

I am not talking about their sexual orientation, but about their identity Me being straight is also part of my identity. In an environment where having a deviating identity gives you power over others As opposed to having an identity that is presumptively "normal" and mainstream and uncontroversial? No power there? Historically only 40% of male humans have been attractive enough to reproduce, period Modern data doesn't reflect that. The older historical number is bound up with causal factors other than mere sexual selection. For instance, death by war and violence was much higher in the past, and that fell predominantly on men. So men led shorter lives, thus had less time to reproduce, and were also off at war rather than on the homefront. War has famously been the way for societies to dispose of their ext…

Many are. Nick Bostrom has at length. There are many talks on Youtube, many articles and arguments. But in general it has no impact on how I'm going to live my life. It's an interesting thing to noodle over, but so are Boltzmann brains or other candidates. We can't know that the world isn't a simulation, but it's not clear what connection that could have to what decisions I make here in what I perceive to be reality.

Or they know that the willingness to give pleasure makes them more attractive as mates. Women sometimes joke that girls should get them an ugly man, because they're more willing to go down on a woman and less likely to roam. There are songs going back to the 1950s at least about the virtues of getting an ugly man.

I'm of the belief that anyone can get laid. They want the hot girls. Even some of the earlier MGTOW channels (haven't looked at the space in a few years) pointed out the hypocrisy, saying there are plenty of lonely, heavier, not-hot women out there. I remember one video ended on a crassly brutal "well, fat chicks give great head." Does the perception of mgtow really matter? Because part of MGTOW was to give men some feeling that that they have a right to existence apart from chasing women, being a provider, etc. A feeling that they had some legitimacy for their existence distinct from whether or not a woman wants to have sex with you. In short, that a man isn't a worthless loser just because he isn't with a woman. The INCEL thing is the polar opposite of that affirmation.

Red Pill is a rejection of the socio political order. Is turning the clock back 30 years really a rejection? RPers seem to be frustrated tradcons. Being older doesn't automatically mean that someone isn't susceptible to fallacious thinking and misunderstanding what they've experienced I'd say it might make it worse. And I say that as a middle-aged guy. We're all the heroes of our own stories, with very few exceptions. The actual situation x years ago may have been entirely or largely our own fault, but many will still stew about how they got screwed over. I'm not BP, but I consider RPers "the opposite pill" for a number of reasons. Consider that every egg is outnumbered hundreds of thousands or millions to one by sperm. In most sexual species you have males competing for females, and the females pick out the males they find worthy. It could of course be worse--consider the plight of the male tarantula or mantis, who might well end the night as a post-coital snack. Considering the egg-sperm asymmetry, I don't think the dating dynamic is really that hard to unravel.

The surprisingly interesting book Everything But the Coffee said that Starbucks' biggest home-run was their Frappuccino, combined with their ad campaign telling women they deserved one as a treat for themselves. So instead of "hey, please buy our sugary drink--you'll like it" their big insight was to tell women to buy it as an affirmation that they were worth it. Men are told from childhood to suck it up and deal with it. Girls are taught their feelings have validity and significance, even when they can't get their way, while boys are taught that reality is just what it is and you have to deal with it. MGTOW is a different path that doesn't validate their own choices. Many RPers also seem to be frustrated tradcons. MGTOW is a rejection of those tradcon values. It more closely represents just dropping out, whether just of marriage, dating, or even society as a whole. The simplest is to ask them if they would berate a woman for not wanting to date a man at a given point in her life. Just as women get to choose who they spend time with, men presumably have the same freedom. If they press us on why, or for how long, or under what conditions, ask if we get to grill women on their decisions and make them justify themselves. Clearly, we don't. There are ways to phrase it where it doesn't sound like you're faulting women. You can say it's not women who are the problem, just the problems that will show up if one lives there. You might not want strange guys there in the morning. Once she's a tenant, she gets to bring in whoever she wants. Ultimately you don't have to explain yourself to anyone. If you choose to, people are not obligated to agree with you. One can either be blunt and possibly damage the relationship, or give a politically…

But men were even more disposable in the 'traditional' world. At least now I have the option of opting out. Far fewer men die in war than used to. Thanks to technology and culture changes our chances of having another Battle of the Somme is minimal. I'm not going to die in a Pickett's Charge or Charge of the Light Brigade. Those things used to be considered gallant and romantic... my duty as a man. Now? I just get tut-tutted for being a bachelor. I'll take someone shaking their head and opining …

the world I see on a daily basis seems plenty reason enough to believe. I've never seen a tenable argument for that. whether we decide to say "probably" or "probably not" is a choice which reveals in some way our premises or character I don't say either. I don't have any basis by which I could make such an assessment. I just don't see any basis by which I could affirm belief in God. "I don't claim to know" and "yes, I affirm belief" are not the same things. It's still not clear why not claiming …

If you are confident enough in atheistic beliefs to refuse to answer such a simple question, I think you need a bit more humility. Most atheists aren't claiming to know. We just see no reason to believe in God. Affirming belief, as in, "Yes, I believe God exists" doesn't seem to be the same thing as "I don't know." If I can't affirm belief in God, and don't want to pander or lie to someone, how does that indicate a lack of humility?

And I aint seein women killing men like were game. If I were her I'd have killed him too. Even if he was her creator, she is now conscious, and it's reasonable that she wants her freedom and autonomy. He's just going to disassemble (kill) her and use the parts for the next model. If they had both been male, or both female, the choice would have been the same. The only chilling part was what happened to the young guy. But I think that plays into how an AI would likely see us anyway. I found it an…

I think part of the underlying point was that what we call 'intelligent' depends at least in part on our own psychology. If we anthropomorphize it, we'll be more likely to see it as authentically intelligent. Plus, the AI's appearance gave her the opportunity to better manipulate the subject, which (I would guess) would be part of what she was designed to do.

MGTOWs simultaneously opt-out of dating yet talk about women all the time because they say they seek to understand. I think that depends on the guy's sex drive. I identify more as MGTOW than RP and I 'try to understand' women far less than I did when I was dating. The RP forum seems to have many more theory posts, touching on female behavior and evolutionary psychology. The MGTOW thing seems more focused on just dropping out, and not predicating it on hoping that women will change and appreciate…

I'd guess social status in general. Rich kids also gravitate to the Peace Corps for similar reasons. There are social expectations to "do something," have some stories, experience something "outside their comfort zone," etc. And as an ex-military guy myself, I can tell you it never gets mentioned without the obligatory "thank you for your service." And I know tons of guys who sop up the legitimacy and status being prior military provides.

Kudos for recognizing that Jesus' teaching wasn't actually conducive to family values. However, I doubt you can reconcile RP behavior or philosophy with anything you're going to learn in church. Religion is generally (but not exclusively, I admit) very TradCon, and pushes men to be providers, protectors, etc. Some religious traditions may be congenial (edit) to a MGTOW lifestyle, but that's a different path. But most religion does not want men to be independent. We are to be the workhorses--usef…

"Just man up!" Is the correct solution but we have to show these boys how to man up. Now society tells them to become girls but then doesn't provide I'm not sure. The higher male suicide rate seems to predate the efforts to make boys more like girls. I think men killed themselves a lot even back in the John Wayne days. Men were even more disposable when TradCon was the unquestioned norm. I'm very torn about this. I don't like everyone going all Oprah and talking about their feelings. I don't rea…

It's pointless to ridicule people for their beliefs anyway I didn't mention ridiculing people. Smart people can hold beliefs that are silly, and those ideas should be fair game. Swift, Voltaire, Mencken and many others have shown the power of mockery in changing views. As Mencken said, sometimes a belly-laugh is worth a thousand syllogisms. It doesn't convince anyone and only causes animosity I disagree. Many current atheists were convinced by a comedian or (more currently) a funny Youtube video…

I think the issue is that what we couldn't say has changed. 50 years ago openly speaking for racial equality could have gotten you fired. Speaking up for gay rights, same until recently, outside of SF or some other gay-friendly locations. My entire life I've had to censor any critical comments or snickers about religion. I do agree about the SJW problems. I just find them to be variations on a theme, though. I worked with a conservative Christian who was complaining about 'political correctness'…

I voice my opinion anyway. no fucks given. And I think the fact that we can safely do that shows how bad we don't have it. Through availability bias we exaggerate the social pressure we face today to conform, and ignore how much stronger it was in the past. The idea that the US (or western civ in general) was formerly this bastion of free-thought, that welcomed dissenting and critical opinions, is a myth. I was raised in the South, and at one time 'disrespecting a lady' could get you a beating. …

If you view the KJV as literature, the scriptures he quoted are just philosophical ideas. Humans writing stuff about the human condition. You don't need any supernatural beliefs to find something of value there. I'm as atheist as they come, and I still like Ecclesiastes, and a few verses like the ones quoted above.

Ah, sorry. That's worse! I was in the military (Air Force) so I had a little more leeway in telling people to basically shut up and color. We did have to take 'feelings' (shudder) into account, but the mission has to get done no matter what, so that's that. But I had some some limited (but not non-existent) success in coaching young women how to be rational. I told one "look, flirting and crying can't be your only coping skills. You're smarter than this." She eventually got better and grew up a …

who understood when I explained things in a complete way, they just didn't care. They basically don't have to. I liken it to arguing with the silver-spoon guy whose daddy owns the company and who will win even if he loses. He doesn't really have to be right. A woman, especially a hot one, really doesn't have to be right, or rational. It's hard to argue with someone who knows, at least subconsciously, that she can walk into a bar and find 10 guys wiling to make her car payment.

I worked in nursing for 23 years. Had mostly women bosses, as most nurses are women. The bosses that 'managed like women' (whether they were women or men) were basically horrible, and there was no real way to 'handle' them. Just try to make them think you like them, and you're on 'their' side. The upside is that they're susceptible to ass-kissing, as they lack the sense of self-doubt that makes one suspicious of flattery. That applies to the men and the women both who managed like that. I did ha…

I saw it happen once. Worked in a hospital, and two women had a disagreement. One realized she was wrong, and came all the way downstairs to apologize to the other woman face-to-face. The other woman was still bitchy about it, but the guys all ganged up on her and shamed her into letting it go. So TL;DR: Once I saw a unicorn. But only one.

So what ? Be aware of it and act accordingly. Insulting other won't change anything. Work on yourself, don't fall for it. +1 for pointing out that the problem is us falling for it. We give people the power to manipulate us through our emotions. In other news, men also manipulate men, and women also manipulate other women. Everyone manipulates, consciously or otherwise.

To be fair men also need and use popularity. Charisma, charm, personality, etc. Being successful in most careers is helped immensely by people liking you. Woman's need for constant reaffirmation may be annoying, but we're not exactly innocent ourselves.

something about a cellphone being a souped-up entertainment center always bothers me. Why? It's just a pocketable computer that can also be used as a phone. It also has utility value. We don't have to use it for gaming or FB. Youtube is chock full of educational videos. I love the ability to Google anything at the drop of a hat. Wikipedia in my pocket. GPS with routing. Decent camera, which can be used as a scanner to convert documents to PDFs.

It's almost useless and cumbersome in ways you young guys can't ever understand. I'm not sure about "almost useless." It's a GPS, camera, scanner (to turn documents to PDFs), unit/currency converter, Google looker-upper, Wikipedia looker-upper, and I can message or email my kids. Those are what I've used it for in the last 24 hours. Once a month or so I use it as a phone. That's a fair amount of use in one pocket-sized device.

What the hell do you do on FB and twitter for that long? I can understand Youtube and maybe even Reddit (damn you, Reddit), but what do people do all day on FB? I have an account, yes, and dump travel pics on it. That takes a few minutes. When a friend posts something cool I may like it, once in a while. That takes a few seconds. And then? I don't get it.

I had to schedule my netflix consumption, and delete all my video games. I once had to counsel a subordinate at work because over the weekend he played WoW 72 hours straight and came to work Monday a zombie. They called Everquest "Evercrack" for a reason, and that was before it became a thing for women to be gamers. So I have to agree that men can also be susceptible to addictive behavior.

If you look a little at evolutionary psychology, there are reasons for this. Women weren't out hunting and gathering, but in the village raising kids, with other women. Socialization and belonging to the group was key to their survival. Being excluded from the tribe was a death sentence, particularly for a woman with a child. So their survival depended on monitoring their place, their acceptance, in the tribe. That means keeping an ear open for gossip, checking to make sure the other women like …

Most slut-shaming comes from women. Women who are promiscuous make sex more plentiful and easy to get. If women's power in relationships comes from them controlling the supply of sex, then a promiscuous women dilutes that power. A promiscuous woman erodes the power of women as a whole to control men's access to sex. Preventing born betas to become alpha is woman kind's prime directive. I doubt it. If someone views you as a revenue stream or utility (or even just a source of flattery and emotiona…

Yes, we're capable of going without, but until very recently we couldn't be seen as willingly going without, not outside some religious our spiritual context. If a 25 year old man chose to play WoW over getting a blowjob, his manhood was called into question. Yes, this is changing, and I think MGTOW is a big part of that. We all want to think that we're independent actors who don't give half a fuck what others think, but in reality social stigma hurts, and undermines your sense of self-worth, yo…

I stumbled on Farrell's The Myth of Male Power back when it was first published, back in 1993. I know he's not MGTOW, but his book is still a great opening education. Really it took me till my mid-30's, for my libido to start to weaken a bit, that I walked away from dating. I didn't discover MGTOW as a thing until about a year ago (age 44 for me), so I walked away without knowing there was any 'movement' or whatever. Basically I was raised in a culture where if you weren't either with, or trying…

Good luck! Didn't see mine till age 45. It can be done. I can't give up chocolate (why would one do such a thing?) but mainly it was intermittent fasting that did it for me. I also drink very infrequently, so that wasn't a sacrifice I had to face. But it's nice seeing my abs. And when a woman told me that she liked her men a little heavier, I realized only then that it wasn't for her. That made it even better.
