OYS 24 Stats Mid 40s, 5’9”, 150.5 lbs, body fat: 12-13% Married 19 yrs, wife mid 40s, 1 kid 8 yo BP: 147.5 lbs (x5), DL: 255 lbs (x6), Sq: 200 lbs (x8), OHP: 95 lbs (x5) This is my first OYS in eight weeks. I realized that my last few entries were mostly thinking and whining. I had an insight into my victimhood mindset but was still playing the victim and that was pervading everything I was doing here. In short, my posts were a waste of my time and that of anyone reading them, so I removed mysel…

No one is here to help you. But if you’re lucky and if you can put aside your ego, you might get something that will help you help yourself.

you're still hung up and you're still comparing yourself to others. None of that shit matters, and you know that, but it doesn't seem like you believe it yet. I only mentioned my neighbor illustratively to make that exact point. It's normal to compare ourselves to other people but it's unproductive to dwell in or hide behind my perceived deficiencies. You're right that this is just an insight for me at the moment. First step is to stop getting down on myself and making excuses. True mindset chan…

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. My point was that I just can’t get hung up on what I don’t have. I don’t actually think I am completely ugly, I just wish I was a lot better looking than I am. I can get so hung up on that that it feels hopeless to try to become as attractive as I can personally be. My neighbor across the street, for example, looks like a blond Chris Evans. All he has to do is stay in reasonably good shape and he looks fucking amazing. No matter how jacked I get or how I dress, et…

OYS 23 Stats Mid 40s, 5’9”, 152 lbs, body fat: 14%-15% Married 19 yrs, wife mid 40s, 1 kid 8 yo BP: 137.5 lbs (x5), DL: 245 lbs (x6), Sq: 190 lbs (x6), Row: 150 lbs (x10), OHP: 90 lbs (x5) A couple months ago I realized that I have a victimhood mindset that is holding me back in a big way and that insight was hugely important. Over these past few weeks I’ve seen I’m not over it and have had several opportunities to observe how pervasive it really is. First example: a coworker recently took a sho…

I essentially stopped seeking out [affection] for myself I'm kind of where you are too, so I'm going to ask you what I'm asking myself right now: What are you going to do about the fact that you want or expect affection from your relationship and aren't getting it? What I mean is: assuming you're not just seeking validation through affection and that affection is what you want and expect from the woman in your life, how are you dealing with the fact that you don't have that? Are you waiting it o…

You never tell your wife where you will be at any time? Edit: just saw you’re not married. Phrasing the question differently: what validation was I seeking in telling my wife where I would be for four hours on a Saturday?

Yeah, if I wanted one I do think I would buy one. I haven’t given it a lot of thought, but I think I would approach her from a position like “I am planning to buy a gun and I want to work with you to find a way to ease your discomfort with that.” I’m not the kind of person who is going to have one under my pillow or something, so my conversation would probably be explaining why it is more cost effective to purchase a gun than to rent one at the range, telling her about trigger locks and safes, e…

Muh excuses. I have 6.5” wrists, low T, anaemia, other shit too long to mention and I still managed to become the dominant form of life on the planet. OK, fair criticism. Good to know I'm probably not physically defective, just mentally defective. drop everything to 20 reps and keep adding enough weight each week that you’d drop one rep (about 5%) ... This is interesting, thank you! I might give this a try next week and see how it feels. When you say increase 5% each week, do you mean increase t…

Right now I've switched bench press from 3x5 to 5x3 and that got me up to 150 lbs (barely) but I don't know if that's actually helping me or not. I used to do a couple added AMRAP sessions every week at ~75% of my 3x5 weight to get some more training in without hurting myself but people said that was too much and would fuck up my recovery so I stopped that. I just read something the other day about certain accessory lifts you can add to help shore up a weak BP (e.g., inclined/seated press) so I'…

When you first benched six months ago, what were your lifts? I started around 90 lbs or so because SL 5x5 wants you to start low. It didn't start getting difficult until I got to about 130 lbs. That was four months ago and I've yet to manage 3x5 at 145 lbs.

You might want to try cycling calories, with workout days at least maintenance. Honestly at that size I would probably make the whole week isocaloric but you could maintain a small deficit if you must. I've thought about that. Goal was to get to a respectable bf% as quickly as possible and follow a traditional bulk/cut cycle after that, but maybe that's unnecessary at novice level? Your lifts suck. You are doing it wrong. Do you have any history of athleticism? How would you rate your effort? Ar…

Why are you wanting to change your program? Your numbers aren't bad but they're still beginner numbers. I didn't expect to be jacked already but I've been at this for six months (not counting the five months of mostly useless dumbbell work I did before that) and as far as I can tell I've only gained six to seven pounds of lean mass, which seems low given some of the reports from others in MRP. Maybe I just have unrealistic expectations. I'm also really surprised that all of my lifts have plateau…

I know some guys here learn about stoicism and if that works for you great, I need to be more in touch with my emotions. Stoicism (in the philosophical sense) is not about avoiding or suppressing emotion. It is about recognizing your emotional state, dealing with it appropriately, and reconditioning oneself over time to eliminate unskillful emotional reactions. A Stoic might say something like... emotions can be rational or irrational, depending on whether the object of the emotion warrants the …

She has an amazing technique of "I'm not feeling well" / "I'm pissed at you" tuned up to 11. Basically when we had a plan set in advance, she just drops it in the morning, tells me she just won't do anything and stay in bed. ... and she just does that. I've called her bluff a few times, or confronted her, does not change a thing. So if I don't want my kids to be left alone in their room I take care of them. Of course, this fucks my whole day. The other day, a guy tried to chat me up at a kid's practice, but I was content with watching and meditating, so I simply didn't respond to him. I looked right at him, and he kept at me, but I never flinched. I wasn't trying to be a dick; I just didn't want to stroke his ego or mine with chit chat at the moment. Was very relaxing. WTF? Did you actually just stare like a mute retard at a guy who was being friendly? You're acting like this was some kind of shit test.

Here’s the deal: when I signed the contract, there was this clause that said that the hourly rate would be 5% less after 6 months, and another 5% after 12 months (total). I’m now employed 12 months with them, so I’ve taken a cut of 10% of my hourly rate, and would like to get this back. For what reason, other than utter desperation, would you accept a deal like this? Do you, in fact, provide less value over time? If you do not negotiate for scheduled rate increases in your upcoming renegotiation…

I’m going to expand my focus to diet/nutrition tracking a bit because I’m almost certainly not eating enough right now. At 20-24% body fat you are too fat to start bulking. Just keep doing your lifts and slim down. You won't gain muscle as fast, but there is still plenty of room in your lifts before you need to worry about eating more. Sleep: Not good enough this week, average was down from 7.25 hours a night the previous week to 7 this week. Seven hours is a pretty reasonable amount of sleep. A…

Wow, thanks for that link. I hadn't read that exchange before, but Maui's description of the struggle really resonates. I am alone - and while in some ways that's amazing, freedom, etc... it is also very lonely. Have you read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson? As you practice giving less fucks about your wife’s frame/validation, it could help to also practice giving more fucks about the shit that’s meaningful to your frame (& within your control). You’ll likely find yourself self-validating more as you meet your goals. No, I haven’t read that one yet, but it’s actually next on the list. I definitely need my own internal yardstick to measure myself against.

That's a fair challenge. Right now it's mostly a process of mindset change. Here's an example I left out of my OYS to avoid triggering Rule 9. My wife came in while I was changing clothes and made a lighthearted joke that I must be running out of pants that fit me, since I've lost so much weight over the past few months. The thing is, I've gained over 15 lbs in the five months since I started lifting seriously and she thought I was getting thinner! It made me think "fuck, I've done all this work…

For one, I’ll be asking for a hormone panel at my physical next week. There are a number of things going on that make me suspect low T, among these is the feeling that “the gains” aren’t where they should be. Starting from scratch in my forties I certainly don’t expect to get jacked overnight, but everything I’m reading online suggests I should be further along than I am after five months of diligent lifting. I didn’t really mean I was looking to “share my gifts with the world”. It was more about getting out of my head and being more present. It’s not really an either-or thing. If you read up on Dread, it’s really just about building up your value, then demonstrating your value in a way that makes people desire your time and attention. You’ll see some of the smart guys here say that Dread is FOMO. So by all means, “do dread”. Lift, pass shit tests, dress and groom nicely, go out and build a life. The idea is FOMO will follow as you become a man people want to be around.

You’re wondering how to establish frame, but right now you are obviously way inside your wife’s frame (which is very common for us new guys). You can’t build your own frame until you step out of hers. Stop trying to read her mind or avoid her moods. Do what feels right to you (assuming you’re not a complete moron), own your choices, and let the chips fall where they may. Finish NMMNG and understand it before you pick up another book.

Yeah, this is one of those things I know intellectually, but don’t feel yet. It’s a big mental shift to go from feeding on external validation to realizing I don’t need that and rediscovering my own sense of self-worth. When I say I “redeemed myself” I meant that I finally initiated sex because I wanted sex and not because I needed to feel a certain way or meet some dumb personal goal. That I was successful was largely beside the point, except that maybe it shows a difference in response to genuine desire vs. validation-seeking.

Every time I think I’ve cut out some bullshit behavior I uncover another subtler layer underneath. So I stopped initiating sex when I could tell I was just looking for…

No one is going to figure this out for you. You have to do the work. Tomorrow is OYS day at MRP. Join us and unfuck. Or don’t.

You’re asking a bunch of internet assholes to tell you what’s important to you. How the hell does that work?

I’m not even sure this contract is covert anyway, since your wife overtly acknowledges it. If you have drinks and then you have sex you both enjoy, that’s awesome. I think what you want to avoid is needing drinks to have sex or creating the correlation in your mind that if we have drinks tonight she will want to have sex. Hell, have you ever tried a “hey babe, let’s get sloppy and fuck tonight.”? Not covert at all!

Now - She wants us to make cocktails on valentine's day. Here's where I need some help : Do I just go ahead with it and smash? Or should I be actively trying to stop this covert contract? Do you want to have cocktails on Valentine's day regardless of whether or not you end up fucking? Yes, you should stop the covert contract and yes, you can have cocktails if you want to have cocktails.

I started using something I call blame syllogisms. It’s a way to focus blame entirely on myself, no matter what the circumstance. Two examples I’ve run into this week: I’m angry because she won’t have sex with me. She won’t have sex with me because I’m fat and needy. Therefore, I’m angry because I’m fat and needy. This is great.

I've just been adding the prescribed 5 lbs. each session (unless I fail). I'll take a look at Greyskull. As skinny as I look, I really want to put on more visible muscle. Eat as you have been. Keep adding a couple of pounds of bw a month. Then cut the flab off when you hit 175 lbs and have some muscle to show. Oof.. at the rate I'm going, by the time I hit 175 lbs I'd probably be at like 22% bf. I was actually thinking of cutting in January because I hate getting chubby. But you're probably righ…

Thanks! I did fail OHP the other day but nothing else yet. I just feel really close to failing on most of them. And, yeah, I've never lifted like this before so I have no context. I'm staying on the program as prescribed (along with some dumbbell work and a few extra evening sets). I've put on about 3.5 pounds in the past month since I started eating more, but it looks like a fair amount of that is fat. I'm in a bout of insomnia lately, so my sleep could definitely be better. Stress is better la…

As for her shit test about her not liking you lately. She’s pushing back testing your frame. Stfu and keep doing your thing There was a hell of a lot of contempt in her voice, so I assumed it was more than "just" a shit test. But it looks like you're right. I've just continued doing what I'm doing and since yesterday she's interacting with me as if nothing had ever happened. Maybe we're progressing to next-level shit tests. And you're right, I do need to GTFO the house more.

I’d hoped my numbers would be higher before that happened, but I’m starting from skinny-arm nerdling and it is what it is. I usually lift in the morning M/W/F and I’ve now added an extra 20-30 minute session on those evenings to get a few more sets in to push it a bit…

That’s an excellent point. But this concept is also well-covered in a number of other books I’ve already read, so it wasn’t a revelation.

I’m sure you’re right. I usually eat ~2,900 Calories per day (TDEE + 500) but I do fall short some days. I haven’t made it my “job”. I’ll push for 3,100 every day for the next few weeks and see what happens. I’ve been reluctant to increase because I’m already at 16% bf and I don’t want to get too flabby, but what the hell. Everyone gets a little fatter over the holidays and I know I can burn it off again.
