He's a self-centered protagonist going through fairly ordinary experiences feeling the world is out to get him who never communicates his feelings. I didn't like it when I read it as a teen and made these observations, but to others he's a "rebel without a cause" because he spurns the world around him and those in it. He may or may not commit suicide at the end instead of communicating or trying to change the world or his reality. It's a decent book but anyone idolizing Holden missed the message…
