Yup, I agree with your conclusion - the article was ill-thought-out, too speculative, etc... I guess I just think his reaction shared those qualities, even if I agree with at least one of his main points: that the article needn't have gone out on a limb without any basis.

OK, I can now see some of the issues with the article itself, but I'm hung up on (A) it being a 'rape apology' (which he claims), and (b) the reason for his firing - I can't imagine not firing him after his public tirade lambasting his colleagues, even in a different situation (i.e. having nothing to do with rape but some other editorial criticism). But yeah, I can see the reason for the article being skewed, even though the closing paragraph is pretty even-handed to me.

Right, but the point is: the dad never had that choice, so he evolves into the deadbeat dad when the child is born ... the mom had that choice, and used it. This is the fairness disparity. I find it hard to fathom the reality of the situation. That a man can be essentially an indentured servant at the whim of a woman for two decades, but the woman can choose any number of alternatives - abortion, adoption, etc... along the way. But you're right, society is stuck in its ways, and this will never be a serious debate. All the more frustrating.

I could be wrong, but I'm relatively sure Germany (or much of it, at least) has free (or heavily heavily subsidized), state-funded childcare options for working parents. I don't disagree - probably a lot of people would retroactively accept it, but that is unfortunate. A spade should be called a spade - if we agree, legally, that non-consensual intercourse is X, then it should be X in all cases, not dependent on the attractiveness of the perpetrator. Interesting points - hadn't thought of some of those issues. My gut says there is a middle ground somewhere, and I'm not really sure of how these things play out in divorce and child custody cases. My understanding, though, is that child support is court mandated only when there is a paternity test, so I'm not sure if last bit is even relevant (maybe in some few exceptional states?
