I've never heard of this before, I'd still call it a silly tradition, regardless of the how many practiced it. I will say though, while I'm not opposed to dating a waitress or something, once I got a PhD the women I've dated include: a NASA engineer, a medical professional, several lawyers, a biologist. None of them have lasted very long, but hypergamy has made my casual (1-3 month) dating life really interesting.

1) This isn't sociology so much as philosophy and cultural studies... and probably more like gender studies and performance studies. 2) Sociology doesn't claim to be a hard science. It's a soft (social) science and largely is marked by quantitative research of social phenomena.

I tried writing an essay from an egalitarian standpoint once years ago. The professor gave me and F and asked if I had even learned anything in the class. I can't even imagine what she would have done if I went full MRA in the paper. Luckily, each professor is different, so maybe yours will be more open to points of view that differ from hers/his.

I'm not sure how they departmental approval, but there are many classes in the humanities that are taught as though they are feminist theory courses although they are listed as something else. I once had a class in Film Theory that was only taught from a rad fem perspective. Annoying as fuck.

You can't generalize the social activities of one species to others. Even chimps and bonobos have drastically different sexual norms. Some people tend to group all social sciences together, and then group the social sciences with the humanities. The top post in this thread even called them "pseudo sciences," which I think is really funny considering that sociology is the most "scientific" of the fields that study society (anthropology as well, I suppose - although sociology tends to be positivist and anthropology tends to be holistic).
