That definitely helped me decide to distance myself from some people. My dad stayed in touch with my maternal grandma after my parents went through a very acrimonious divorce and would help her around the house and sometimes give her flowers, cards, etc. on special occasions. It made it way easier on us kids that she had a good relationship with both of my parents and could help smooth things over between them for us.
