Yes. So sick of the "no true scotsman" fallacy in feminism. You can't just say "that's not real feminism" and have it negate all of the harm that certain feminist-aligned beliefs have done and continue to perpetuate currently.

We knew that women's issues were mainly caused by hysteria We knew that black people do not feel pain the same as white people We knew that marital rape is not a real thing We knew that your genes determined everything about you We knew that men have bigger brains and that is why women need to be treated inferior We knew a lot of things that were completely self-evident because of "reality". Should we go back to that way of thinking? Or is it only you and the people you agree with/agree with you…

Common sense is no replacement for actual data. I don't know what the "correct" answer is here (i'm not even sure how one would measure "horniness") but "common sense" and "repeating something 90%" people say as a fact is a dangerous route to follow. I think there are arguments to be made it has gotten us in trouble before.

The size of the Y has relatively little to do with the phenotypic differences in the way men and women present different afflictions. You are correct that anything that is x-linked recessive will disproportionately affect given the single copy of X. Autism, ADHD, depression, pretty much everything you think of with a wide sex-based difference in presentation has little to do with XY vs XX directly.

I make a point of being open with everyone, but in particular the men I'm close with, about the mental health issues I deal with, the fact that I'm on an antidepressant for MDD, have adult diagnosed inattentive ADD, anxiety, and see a therapist. It has certainly caused a lot of people some discomfort when I causally bring it up (when appropriate to the conversation). I've had people do the slow back out of the circle, give me the side eye like I'm now more of a threat (dude it depression, not un…

100%. The teacher for my daughter's preschool class is amazing about this. And he incorporates most of it into play activities. The kids all really like it, because they get to play, but he makes the "lessons" about whatever the kid(s) hes focused on at that moment are playing with. I feel like this is a really good strategy for teaching boys because it lets them be moving and makes their interests the focus. Obviously a great thing when we know how much worse boys do (because the school system,…

I know OP was referencing boys, but I have a daughter and I want to brag about her. We have been reading to her since ~6months (obviously "reading" is to be taken with a grain of salt here) including teaching her some baby sign language. She is in preschool now, and just took the kindergarten entrance test (basically to test the kids to see if they need any extra services, and for the ones that straddle the age line to determine if they would benefit from another year in preschool) and this litt…

Very true. Grew up catholic, that glorification of suffering, along with some truly awful youth group leaders, being forced through confirmation by my mom (despite telling her I don’t know that I believe any of this and certainly am not ready to “confirm” those beliefs) and then actually reading most of the bible are why I am an atheist.

Religion and faith, particularly monotheistic ones, are there to subjugate the masses by ruling elite and to ensure those masses are damn happy about it. There is no other explanation for why any god would ask you to turn away from all earthly pleasures, supposedly a gift from god. Edited last sentence in response to a comment below. As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety, exacerbated by inattentive ADD that went undiagnosed until I was 30, thank for not only recognizing these issues but putting in the effort to understand some of the unique issues faced by men in this regard. Nearly. And I don’t mean that as pointing blame. But more that, specifically in the case of feminist jargon here, it is where feminism/feminists and mens advocates (whatever terms you want to use here because it’s not always mutually exclusive) end up talking past each other. It seems areas of study that are, at least seemingly, more accessible to the average person are prone to the discrepancies between jargon and common usage. It’s why most abnormal psych student thinks they can now diagnose t…

No one says all men are benefitting at all times, or that men who do not conform are often left out. Herein lies the issue with jargon being used haphazardly. I’m certain that most feminists, when asked directly, would agree with you. The problem arises when jargon escapes into general use, and particularly in the age of the internet and social media. It has been used incorrectly enough that the original definition no longer fully describes its usage.

The worst part is it has nothing to do with thinking men are fragile, in the sense of being one straw away from breaking the camels back as many men are holding up more than they can handle and are expected to be stoic about. I could accept it if it was used that way. But instead its used to say "he is so unsure of himself, if we berate him and challenge his masculinity he'll cry and throw a fit at us, thus he hates women cause his masculinity is so fragile".

Because the loudest most ridiculous ones are the ones you run into the most. The rational, average ones aren’t out picking fights on the internet. The internet has pushed people farther into their own echo-chambers and the easiest way to gain influence and power is to be even louder and more ridiculous than the person before.

I think “the patriarchy” is “our society” but when you need a common enemy or scapegoat “our society” is too vague, and since “the patriarchy” scapegoats men and sounds like the evil opposite (mr. Glass, if you will) to feminism, it’s the perfect replacement. It’s literally class struggle but they put a misandrist bent on it because, to many modern feminists, men are the enemy.

Yea and if you are a feminist you are part of problem too. I have no evidence you are so I’m just going to assume you are a radfem and blame his death on you. And anything bad that ever happens to your kids. Because you might be, so you are responsible. See how fucking stupid that is? Why jump to that? Why not instead focus on the issue at hand? That a boy was driven to suicide because of the way society views and treats boys? Wishing that his mom is a part of the problem? What does that accomplish? I’m not white knighting anything. It’s just that when a kid is ostracized, bullied, and threatened with police action by kids at his school and then he kills himself, my first thought isn’t “I hope his mom is a radfem so she can get her just desserts”. My first thought is that poor kid didn’t have anyone, except his family, sticking up for him, and these kids bullied him so badly that he killed himself. His parents failed him. If you ever have kids, and they end up depressed enough that the shit…

Jesus dude. You have a fucked up sense of the world if you think it’s his parents fault. It’s the fault of the pieces of shit that bullied him. Congrats on being tough enough not to kill yourself. That doesn’t mean your parents did anything right just like this kids suicide says nothing about his parents, unless they were bullying him too.

The idea is there are different levels of evidence needed for various levels of government intrusion/disruption of a private citizens life. The one you are likely more familiar with is what’s used in jury trial, “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt”. This is the highest level and I have heard it described as >99% certain the defendant is guilty (though I’m not a lawyer). Then there is clear and convincing evidence, meaning it’s highly probably the accused did what they did, I’ve heard it described …

They need to completely re-do the way these investigations and judgments are made. The 51% standard is complete garbage. There should be discovery for the defendant. The accused’s name should be protected as well. The whole thing is a joke. There is too much room for false allegations and biases against a defendant. It ends in a shorty investigation that any one can poke holes in and then the whole thing resurfaces in the media further traumatizing the victims.

Oh and if you were raped it couldn’t have been a women because then “nice!”, “you’re a pussy”, or “I don’t believe you”. Bing bing bing. This is why I came here in the first place. I think a non-trivial number of the users there feel like this commenter, but baryon and his crew of spineless d-bags don’t let real discussion happen. If your ideology/beliefs are so fragile that a discussion of the VERY CLEAR issues will cause so much cognitive dissonance that you can’t handle it, maybe, just maybe, there is something wrong/underdeveloped about those beliefs.

Ya but you can have an expectation (from the sub name alone, not the reality of menslib) that a mens liberation subreddit would be more open to hearing from pro-feminism men, who agree with the definition of these bullshit terms, but still is uncomfortable about them. I don’t expect that at all in any of the other feminist subs, because they cater exclusively to women. I was having a similar discussion about these issues with u/rhinonomad the last few days.

Without a doubt. In the story above, I felt so bad for that man, and I’m sure it will take a long time for him to move past it. That poor child in the car though. I’m so happy she was still sitting facing back so she didn’t have to see what happened, but who knows what she’s witnessed at home. And there she was old enough to know something is wrong and to be traumatized. I just hope she is ok.

Ya I didn’t think you were necessarily saying it to make it gendered, but “men are bigger/it doesn’t harm them as much/they use more harmful means” arguments are oft repeated by bad faith actors. It is a common refrain by people who are fighting to prevent the recognition of male victims DV and SA or downplay men’s abhorrently high suicide rate. I don’t think too many people would say the level of damage caused by any type of violence should be considered when considering these issues, so long a…

It’s also only takes into account immediate physical damage to the victim. Does not account for anything long term or the psychological or emotional damage done. Nor does it take into account the damage done to innocent bystanders (read: children)

I’m assuming this was before I edited and added some more context to my last comment. But physical harm is not the only type of violence there is, especially in a system that assumes all men are at fault and all women are victims.

I’m not going to say your wrong because I think the severity is something to consider. But I’m curious, in your formula, what factors would be included in severity? In the example you gave the severity is measured only on physical pain. Is this the only factor? And how do you standardize something as subjective as pain? The measure of “severity” seems to be another way of making sure women are seen as ~the victim~ and meant to exclude men because, on average, they are larger. But this does not i…

Wow thanks for taking the time to respond so thoroughly to my comment. I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said here. And I appreciate that, as a feminist, you did not take it as me attacking you or feminism. I’m not anti-feminism by any means and so I always try to be careful about not coming off that way. However, I think feminism can be defined rather easily: it's a movement that advocates for gender equality. That has always been my understanding of the most basic definition of it. An…

I think many of the posts do address actual men's issues, though the community doesn't find as much value in a white cis-het perspective. I'm just not really willing to tip toe around to make sure they don't feel uncomfortable. The whole point of an open and honest discussion is to freely discuss things in a good-faith manner no matter how it make an individual feel. No, I don’t think so. I think I found it through another users history. I was in a bit of a rabbit hole. I hope it is because I’d rather be allies than enemies. I think their mods will have to fundamentally change themselves and the sub rules before they will make any difference. But I’m banned from there for asking about which flavor of feminism they support. Too difficult of a question for them to answer. Quick edit: I think many of the men there are good people who are genuinely looking for support and a safe gendered space that doesn’t constantly belittle the issues we face.

Lol they banned for this response to their statements on menslib: Lol this the exact opposite of my experience there. I was banned for asking about what “flavor” of feminism they support because their sidebar states they support all feminism. I have never seen anything misogynistic or anti feminist (I.e. not sucking the metaphorical teat of feminists) make it more than 10 minutes on menslib. They are too scared to even give some basic tenets of feminism that they base their views on. Also the fact that the mod there is going into menslib just to report shit is ridiculous. I have seen some of your stuff involving the US and it makes me so happy to see someone doing this work. You do such a great job of presenting men's issues without attacking, taking away, or being negative about helping women's issues. It's a fine line to balance, and you seem to be able to do a full scale Olympic level balance beam routine on that line. I hope that we see more funding flowing to your, and other similar, work.

Reading it again it's a little ambiguous. Seems like the title is hinting at both, but the text sounds more like only women on men. Maybe /u/throwaceornotaceblob will clarify. I commented elsewhere, but personally I think men and women both do it because of these reasons in addition to those true psychopaths that get off on the power and fear part.

I can see that they would want to help, but the fact that if they earn more than their partner, the women get less sexual satisfaction, suggest it is not an altruistic behavior? I guess I feel like in all 3 situations related in the communication paper seem problematic to me and that they likely end up in a downward spiral. I think it's three things. They do not understand that it is not a zero-sum game. Men (at least myself and all the men that I've talked about with this) don't want to take any of the pie away from women. They want a bigger pie that is distributed in a way that allows those who need help to get it, men or women. They believe that men are bad and a danger at all times and that men hold all privilege and power. Why should we help people that are inherently bad and dangerous? Especially when those p…

So I’m going to preface this by saying I’m married and was with my wife since I was 17 (36 now). So I never really dealt with the dating scene and I have the utmost sympathy for anyone out there trying to navigate those waters. However, I think most of the comments here missed a big part of why men are laughed at/complained about in dating apps and that it extends to essentially every social (and even many systemic) issues men face. We hear about women’s stories and the hardships they face const…

The ebola thing according to that link shows either statistical insignificant differences or no differences So it doesn’t kill more women. And I wasn’t arguing that it makes it better/worse. Just that it is what it is, and that’s partly evident in women having way more autoimmune disorders. Because their immune system is more active.

Thanks. You may want to double check the Ebola one though. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5635524/#!po=0.980392 Seems like there were a lot of news reports saying it was hitting women harder but taking a look back this seems to not be the case. More likely a case of the death of women being more noteworthy. It’s interesting to look at some of what’s out there. Seems to be very little (but growing) evidence based on biological differences (outside of the cursory understanding that e…

Not sure why you got downvoted for this. The more active immune system of women is thought to be why they also have far far more autoimmune disorders than men.

I don’t really mean that literally. I don’t think you should let the fear of the current situation prevent you from having kids/boys, if you having kids/boys is what you want.

This was exactly how my parents dealt with my sister and she knew she would get away with anything she did. She would stand in front of me and hit herself in the arm to give herself a red mark, then kick me in the groin, and run to my parents crying that I hit her. I would get grounded. She was never held responsible for any of her actions and now that we are older it continues. Nothing is her fault. Her getting fired for not being willing to take a drug test because she was stoned? Not her faul…

I’m so sorry you had to live through that nightmare. But it sounds like you are on the path to recovery and in a much better place now. You should be proud of the progress you’ve made and the strength and bravery it takes to share your story. I hope that any other people in a similar situation to where you were read this and know they aren’t alone, aren’t weak, and aren’t deserving of this sort of treatment. Good luck with your journey and growth as you continue down this healthier happier path.

The whole "if men could pregnant" argument, outside of just being ridiculous for all the reasons mentioned in the post and the comments, would seem to go against most feminist thought on transgender individuals. So either everyone making this argument is a TERF or is doing some in total bad-faith.

Once again another great, poignant, and timely post u/TheTinMenBlog. Thank you. It’s frustrating to see both sides on this discussion (probably a generous description) inflate, misuse, and misrepresent the stats to their own end. It does no good for anyone and it obfuscates the reality of the situation and prevents productive changes. I think one thing that we need and would help alleviate some of the damage done in truly false accusations as well as accusations that can’t be proven (i.e. is rep…

100% yes. Women have experiences that men don't. They need to have spaces that they can discuss them with other women without a need to think about men in the space. A lot of women have no idea how to respond to mens feelings This right here. I'm not aware of any woman (outside of my wife) that I could be completely open with about my feelings. Even my friends that are women (past and present) I would not feel comfortable letting them in on my honest feelings. A couple of times that I have I have been met with them becoming standoffish, telling me why I'm wrong to feel that way, or something similar. I don't think I've ever shared more than once with someone…

Each “side” resents the other for having easy access to the thing that’s missing. This right here. And it’s also where I struggle with defining what equality looks like in the end. Because when all we do is look at what someone else has that we don’t we will never find equality, because it would have to be a mandated 50:50 split on everything. You can’t mandate empathy with others, acceptance of oneself, and interpersonal relationships to make them equal. This has to be learned from the bottom u…

I have to say I agree with pretty much everything you said. The only thing I want to clarify about the evolutionary psychology. My beef isn’t that it’s not real, that would be dumb to deny its existence. Like you pointed out psychology is a pretty fluid and very soft field as is, but from what I remember (it’s been a year or so since I’ve listened to anything from him) he really presented it as facts. I just don’t like the certainty (that’s not the right word, but that he presented it as fact in…

I understand what he was against and I feel, generally he was right. I was just pointing out that he took that good fight and used it to get onto podcasts and other media that were using his stance in a negative way about pronoun preference. I don’t like that he was willing to let them use his issue to rally right wing BS. But I get why he did it. I just hate that did so by associating the fight with people like Shapiro, Rogan, and other thinly veiled alt-right talking heads.

I think he generally uses them as meta-narratives, but from what I’ve heard from him they almost always fall back to judeo-Christian stories when those are just a copy of a copy of a copy of other narratives. Pushing the religious side without talking about it as pure mythology gives too much credence to the idea of divinity. At least in my opinion. Some religious ideals do have benefits I would agree but I haven’t found a religious ideal that is solely the product of religion. Most, if not all,…

Jordan Peterson is an odd case. I’ve listened to a lot of his lectures and even his book (12 rules) and what he says makes some sense, and more importantly, the advice he gives, I think, is really useful especially for young men who feel lost. I don’t agree with his reliance and love of judeo-christian religious mythology. But him as a person is different in my opinion. He certainly doesn’t practice what he preaches. And he took the whole pronouns thing too far, in my opinion, as a way of gainin…

Even when certain progressives admit sexism against men is more than just an irritation, some (many/more than a few) feel that it is the fault of men directly (males are violent so they deserve harsher punishment) or indirectly (the “patriarchy”). And this results in the it’s men doing it to men so men need to fix it, as a way to excuse their own shitty behavior and absolve themselves of any responsibility to society or the way it functions.

It was actually started by male mythopoetics to describe the idea that the only way to be a man is to be ultra tough, aggressive, and dominant. I can understand this definition and I think it’s useful for breaking down barriers so that all men are considered masculine. But you are right that these other groups have co-opted it and twisted it to mean any trait they don’t like, particularly if it is expressed by a man.

They had an opportunity to be a great sub but the moderation is absolute shit. If you think that one was bad check out r/feminismuncensored where I posted the same thing. One of the commenters, blackbutterfly, was not happy and refused to look at the stats. Doubled down on everything she said. I know the study that was used to create the 1 in 4 stat about college women being raped in college did not ask about level of intoxication which is a bit misleading but whatever it’s technically/legally true that any level means you can’t consent. My issue is that they never ask about whether the man was intoxicated. It was just assumed that men were the perpetrator. Not that two drunk college students made a bad decision. It also included things like a person trying to hold your hand or lean i…

100% agree about that other commenter. I’m rereading the article and the cdc data to see if I’m missing something but I don’t think I am. Also from what I can tell that lifetime data wasn’t collected in that survey. At least it’s not listed in the methods, but they also don’t give any indication (they being CDC) about where it came from. I’ve also heard discussions of lifetime vs period prevalence and the reliability of each. I don’t know if there is any consensus or not.

I brought this here after seeing it in another sub. The researchers show that men are raped at the same rate as women and that women are perpetrators of rape against men at the same rate as men on women. Men suffer long term psychological trauma from being raped, contrary to the popular narrative. Furthermore, the researchers go on to make an argument that we have an ethical obligation to take these cases seriously unlike they have been treated in the past. They link the lack of belief of men di…

It is what it is. If both people are happy/accepting of the situation then isn’t that the goal? Doesn’t make anyone more or less. An anecdote from a older friend who was in what could be considered a sugar daddy relationship. His buddies have him a lot shit for it, making fun of him “paying for sex.” Always took it well and with a laugh. Finally got fed up one day and snapped back, “I know what my sex costs me (he paid for her apartment, and knew it wasn’t a monogamous relationship), do you know…

I've only ever been shamed for bringing it up by women or white-knights that feel it takes away from discussions about FGM, which is bullshit, especially because FGM, to my knowledge, is not common in the US. I've usually heard something along the lines of its the patriarchy's fault, so obviously men shouldn't complain because we caused it and are the only benefactors. Or that it isn't a big deal and/or its for hygiene. Though usually these last couple of arguments are not presented in a shamefu…

These are my opinions formed over 35 years and 18 of them being spent on a university campus. And after seeing too many young men have their lives ruined by our fucked up system. So here’s my take: If one or both parties has drank but is still at or under the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle both have total agency and are responsible for their own behavior regardless of the inebriation level of the other. Therefore no assault. If one party is past that limit but still generally in control …

Patriarchy benefits women in all sorts of ways, many of which they will denounce as actually repression or misogyny. But I believe this goes both ways. Women do not have to sign up for the draft. Many feminists would call this benevolent sexism, despite almost no women would willing change the law. Women get protected from the dangers and consequences of war, but their argument is it’s only to keep women down.
