i'm a CS guy too. i dont think getting hit in the head repeatedly is a good idea either, and i have a short reach. But i do judo and love it, check it out.

I've always had trouble socializing at the work place, yet when we go out to happy hour, company holiday parties, etc, I am very outgoing and social. I thought it was because I was a programmer and in a too technical mindset to BS about the weather but this makes perfect sense to me. I am essentially acting as a worse version of myself.

Yeah I notice after I started training judo I felt generally better. Instead of just being a cubicle monkey I was also thinking about how I'd be fighting in the gym later that night. Then on nights where I wasn't fighting I was thinking about doing cardio so I can get better when I am back at it, drinking less, etc. If you find yourself in a self defense situation, any training should help, but like the other guy said, avoid street fights.
