I think all the stuff about attracting a mate is true for all of human history. This is also what I think. Why I think it's the case is that a man's attractiveness doesn't translate well to online profiles. Profiles are not people. A woman's evolutionary fitness can more readily be ascertained visually than a man's. A man has to demonstrate his fitness, which is hard to do on a dating profile.

I talk a lot about my previous relationship in therapy, and my therapist (who happens to be a 60-something year old lesbian) is constantly pointing out my ex's female privilege and how things would seem if the roles were reversed, which is awesome because I've never even mentioned anything about gender to her.
