Context matter as well. But in general, most people like you when you tell them what they want to hear. An emotionally mature person wouldn't appreciate lies, though.

Not totally fair to blame them, though. They lie because most people want to hear lies. I have seen it enough already that people especially girls will reward you if you lie to them. Saying the truth makes you look rude and they perceive you in a bad way. Just tell 'em what they want to hear and you'll be all good.
