There are better solutions. We made an apple “family” where we both can put limits and track the kids phones. We still disagree about certain things on the phones like time limits but each parent can decide for their house. We decided to have kids always share locations with both parents. It isn’t an issue unless a parent starts showing up when they shouldn’t. That is something to be negotiated between you.

Hang in there. It is really rough. As far as fighting for all you deserve. It’s 50%. Just get together with her, write up an agreement to divide things in half, and move on with your lives. Take the value of each item minus how much is still owed. Divide debts also. Then you can walk into a mediator fairly easily.

Your girls need you. I know it’s hard. Take it one step at a time. Work on getting yourself back together. It’s great that you have your parents there for you. Help them help you. Please don’t give up. Your life has value.

It’s hard. It sounds like you are really reflecting on your life and focusing on the right thing to do. Good job on that. Friends are crucial. You need someone to talk to. Deep talks where you can say what you feelings are. You did a really good job here, but it’s helpful to have a real person rather than strangers on the Internet. I know that’s hard to find. Maybe try some Meetup groups, try to reconnect with family or old friends. Even if it’s phone calls. That helped me a great deal. I care a…

I’m a divorced father of three. This is the third Christmas for me since the divorce. We alternate and she has them this year. It is hard. In my case, both of us are committed to doing what’s best for the kids. That means we generally invite the other parent to important events in their lives like birthdays and Christmas. It can be a challenge to spend those times with her, but it’s also wonderful to spend it with the kids. And they enjoy having both parents. I would recommend trying it if it’s …

Keep doing the best you can for your kids. That sounds great. Divorce is really hard emotionally. As someone who had a really emotional time, I can understand her not being able to keep it together. She may be doing the best she can. My ex wife and I had a separation period where we would each spend one or two days at a friend’s house. I know you want to spend every minute with the kids, but it might be beneficial for them if you took an evening off to yourself once in a while. Then you get that…

I know exactly how you feel. I went through the same exact thing. I have three kids too. Time with them is the most valuable thing I have. It seems to be a social contagion. A warped view of feminism. It’s probably some things you could’ve done better too. But ultimately, marriage is over if one person says it is. I believe you are a good husband. Focus on being a good father. As hard as it is for you, it’s hard on the kids too. They need you.

Men’s preferences definitely change with age. As I get older, I am less interested in younger women. You are painting with a pretty wide brush.

When you’re single, you have to do everything yourself. In marriage, there is a lot of division of labor. The woman might be cooking while the man is fixing the house. Just a hypothesis, but maybe it has to do with keeping your brain engaged.

We had a meeting and divided our wedding pictures in half. It’s an important part of my life I still intend to keep. But it’s not like I look at them every day.

I appreciate you connecting the dots. It does seem like my ex-wife doesn’t really understand what it means to sacrifice for the people you love.

Thank you for putting this into words. I have felt the same way.

I was in a similar situation. My advice is to go feel your feelings. he said you don’t have any friends. Go make some. Or get closer to those ones who you kind of know. Talk to family. The way to get past traumatic experiences like that is by talking about them and reliving them in a safe place. You can jump into bed with someone else, sink yourself into work, or work on your fitness. Those aren’t necessarily bad things, but at the end of the day you need to work through your feelings

I Appreciate the thorough research. I did go to your link and confirmed they are adjusting the male life expectancy by five years which does seem unfair. I do agree with the previous commentor that you should go recalculate things and provide a table. You’ve done a lot of work already, but that step would really drive home the point.

My ex and I did an amicable divorce without lawyers. It is possible. We used agreements from divorced friends as a template. We divided everything 50/50 including kids time. I paid extra to keep the house and keep her on the mortgage to avoid refinancing. Everything is negotiable. The New Mexico court system also had templates online.

You’re painting women as nefarious. They are just people trying to do their best. Some of them are not for you and sometimes they make mistakes. The women could write the same thing about men. I imagine you were better when you first got married than you were at the end.

Man, go take care of your kids. Yes your ex is failing, but the kids are suffering. Take them 50/50 for reals.

Having read the later comments about her cheating with other guys and hiding messages. It’s not always the case, but even I have to agree it’s quite likely she is using OP as a backup and seeing other men.

She divorced me after 17 years for what I considered minor reasons. We divorced after 9 months. She changed her mind 1 month after it was finalized and says she regrets divorce and thinks she just needed time. She really hasn’t been seeing anyone else. Despite what all of these guys say, it isn’t always cheating. Feelings and relationships are hard. You can ask her and be the judge of whether you trust her. I have been working for 1 year trying to see if we can make it work again. Only you can d…

Thank you for the thoughtful response! It helps. I see the problems with keeping score, but I also feel like some score needs to be kept if one partner thinks the other isn’t pulling their weight. At least to get some baseline data.

So are you adding up every hour? Or just generally getting a feel for things? Approximating? I have found this to be really difficult problem so I would appreciate any insight from someone who seems to have figured it out.

How do you account for efficiency? My wife would take an hour to fill the basket of laundry because she was watching tv on her phone. Then she would count it for an hour.

Just be fair. Divide everything 50-50. He may get the house, but you get the money for your half of the equity. In my opinion, the person who wants to leave should leave the other person in the house. Don’t let money get in the way of life.

Life can be hard at times, but things can change. Give them time and effort to make it better and be patient. You should be proud for reaching out for help. People want to help. Give them a chance.

You’re gaining a partner. Someone you can open up to emotionally. Someone to come home and talk about your day with. Someone who will be there for you when you’re old and sick and you need help or company. Obviously there’s a financial risk, life is about taking risks. What is your goal in life? To have as much money as possible?

How long have you been divorced? I'm in a similar situation so I understand that feeling. Mine is the reasonable choice, but I'm not sure I can regain those feelings.

It is what I wanted but now I’m trying to build trust and figure out if I can accept the relationship going forward. Life is never simple. Or maybe I am just never happy.

Because she thought she was sure. I agree that a separation would’ve made A lot more sense. I guess we all make mistakes sometimes. She had a warped view of our relationship. She thought I was emotionally abusive. She didn’t understand me because we were not communicating well. It seems to be a common pattern. Women get tired of the relationship and leave. And in the process, they hurt a lot of great men.

There’s definitely no affair. I think she just needed time on her own to reflect on how the relationship really was. When you were living together, you don’t get that break from the person. She had been living on her own five months when she changed her mind.

In some cases, one person’s behavior is the sole problem. Much more often, both people have problems because they’re trying to respond to the other person and handle a confusing interaction where neither one feels appreciated.

I went through the cycle of grief: denial, bargaining, anger, depression, acceptance on repeat countless times. Each time I got a better form of acceptance. At some point, I felt like I reached a real acceptance. I think her for divorcing me and happily signed the papers (10 months after starting divorce). She came back one month later wanting to try again. I said I would try to see if we could restart the relationship because at that point I was genuinely ready to move on. That was eight months…

Have a serious conversation about what her needs are and what your needs are. Try to understand the real reason things aren’t working anymore.

I’m currently going through this scenario. It is hard. Internet will always tell you to break up with that narcissistic person. And that’s tempting because it’s so satisfying to reject them when they want you back. I would encourage you to think about it more carefully though. Have things changed? Can they change? What were her faults? What were yours? Can you give her the grace of forgiveness without holding it against her? Is it enjoyable to be with her? I’m currently trying to figure that out…
