Well said. I regularly read both TRP and MRP, but your point completely explains why MRP resonates with me more.

Echoing the covert contract sentiment. Try to be more assertive and direct. "I washed and folded the whites already. The colors are in the dryer, but I need to hit the gym before it closes. Can you fold the colors when they're dry." If she doesn't do it, don't ask why she didn't do it. Instead tell her, "You have to meet me half way here, or you can do your own laundry." If she still doesn't do it, stop doing her laundry.

I'd temper the advice here with the fact that you're 250+ lbs on a 5'7" frame. Squat even with just a bar and you're moving close to 300lbs. That's impressive and scary at the same time. The good news is doing almost anything will yield results. Reduce your meal portions. Cut out sugar drinks and desserts. Go for walks twice a day, every day. Read up on lifting. Strong lifts 5 x 5 is great for someone who has to start with just the bar.

I let my anger get the better of me, and end up acting like a punk. I think I'm misapplying "holding frame." When something sets me off and I see red, I do my best to control myself, but my emotions obviously leak out. When my wife asks, "Is something wrong?" or "Are you mad?", I respond "no" and try to focus on being productive. But I'm failing. I end up acting cold and distant because I don't want to blow up and get into an argument, and I end coming off butt hurt. It's embarrassing.

If it was just the difference between a fun, yet controlled, turn versus a needlessly conservative turn, wouldn't you label it as a compliance test?

Which leads to my next point. Fuck debt! Interest is the problem, not debt. If you you can secure a loan with 0% APR, use it. Let someone else pay the opportunity cost of your purchase. Otherwise, think long and hard. I really like a quote attributed to Einstein: “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it ... he who doesn't ... pays it.”

Your situation sounds so familiar, it's eery. How did you handle your wife having credit cards? What stopped her from continuing spending by piling on on debt?

I know it's a small step, but good on you.

My wife has her own accounts. Closing accounts across the board isn't going to happen. Obviously, I can stop handing over money, but I'm not ready to go nuclear.

Read this sentence to yourself a couple of times. See the passivity, the lack of action, the uninvolved almost apathetic tone it has? So you take no action and... nothing changes. Who woulda thunk it. You will never get different results until you start doing something different. You're right. I've taken responsibility for my spending, but that has just freed more money for my wife to spend, which of course led to resentment. Covert contracts are insidious. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but I'l…

The vast majority of it spent on the kids. I actually frequent /r/financialindependence. I have a theory that spending will increase in relation to the money available to spend, which is supported by a decade of living month to month even as my salary has increased 3X.

I recognize that I need to take responsibility for my own happiness but have made little progress. Money is a problem. Supposedly, I earn enough enough to put my household in the top 16% in the country. Yet, we end each month in the red with more credit debt. We've had the talk, repeatedly, but nothing changes. The house is a mess. Our stuff owns us. Between donations and the trash bin, I'm on my way to owning very little. My wife has stepped up and started organizing, but there is a mountain in…
