0	What a legend The subsidy was only put in place because more men were earning less due to the explosive growth in wage inequality which is the source of so many of our social problems today. I wouldn't say the the state was intent on subsidizing single motherhood but as the male role as a wage earner became less useful in relationships, and income subsidy had to be available equally to all, fathers were less likely to be kept around even if they could produce a little bit of income.
