I'd tend to agree with you - the incentives are too great for the industry to solve these issues on their own. Of course, I think that's the case for any industry; they're going to do what consistently makes the most money until social change makes those habits unprofitable. As a psychologist with a particular interest in pharmacology, I'm routinely distressed by how much professors and textbooks push the status quo as gospel when it comes to medicine and drugs. I'd say 95% of students come out of these fields with deeply ingrained ideas on medicating conditions without really having put much thought into the physiology of what these drugs are doing.
