My mom also made me feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about puberty. She made fun of me getting my period when I was 12 in front of her friends and I didn't tell her I got my period again until I was almost 16. My mom and I didn't have that kind of relationship where it was okay for her to make light of something so big for me. I stole, bought, and made my own products until then. :/ I completely understand how traumatizing those experiences can be, and I'm tearing up thinking about how we were…

I've been told that my emotional pain made someone feel that I loved them. That hurt cannot be taken away.

This is thr first reference I've seen of Soft White Underbelly. I love watching these interviews, have learned so much from them, and I highly recommend everyone watch. There's a lot of triggers though, so be in a healthy mental space.

Knowledge is power, and having a place where women tell on men is amazing. I love knowing what behaviors to look out for now, and I'm much more confident in my ability to block the bullshit.

My last ex went to the Kroger (grocery chain) while I was cooking dinner to get beer. He came back with beer, chocolates, and cheap ass wilted flowers. This was 7pm on Valentine's NIGHT!! and he had the audacity to wonder why I wasn't grateful.

I once got a valentines gift in a walmart bag. It was a $5 candle set bought on the way to my apartment. I broke up with him later. What a skeeve. The best gift I've received was a cheap microwave. The guy brought it to our first date because I said I didn't have one during our first conversation before going on the date.

It's so difficult to give ourselves grace when we weren't given the right tools to protect ourselves from bad relationships. I'm still learning how to place proper boundaries and what a healthy relationship actually looks like. I still am not sure if healthy love exists, or what that even feels like, as in- do I have that now? Or am I just looking for all the wrong things since that is what I am used to, and have a bad feeling because I think he's being nice to take advantage of me at some point…

I too would get my hopes up for surprises, gifts, and other nice things men would say they "thought about" or "wanted to do." When my guy tried to pull this, I told him if he wanted to do it, he would. He knows not to say those things, and just does them. Also, I stopped praising men for doing basic things that are expected of women like cleaning or taking care of the cats and plants. He wanted them too, he can share in the responsibility. I also have stopped moving out of the way for men. You w…

I was thinking it sounds exactly how my ex would reach out to me. When OP started to say they started dating in 2018 (when I left him) and that he would drink and go to casinos every weekend (also something my ex would do), I was thinking it might be him, lol! But she said they’re student and he already got through school many years ago.

Had a date call our waitress “fun size.” Like okay, what’s that supposed to mean? Am I not? Edit: I should say boyfriend, not date. This was my birthday weekend away on our first trip together. Before I started to really understand what my boundaries were, how to set them, and still trying to be the cool girl. It hurt my feelings and I asked him to not talk about other peoples’ bodies. The more I’ve thought about it, the more it pisses me off he said that to me. It’s so disrespectful and rude. I…

I honestly don’t mind if he peed with the door open when it is just us, but pooping and having company are times when privacy is absolutely required. I would never barge into the bathroom while someone is evacuating unless it’s like my BFF I’ve known forever and it’s not weird, nor would I invite that. I need my “alone time.”

The sad thing is you are not alone. I know the sentiment behind those words and your struggle. It’s not easy working through trauma while trying to break free from the guilt we and society places on us. Some people are willfully ignorant and some just don’t understand. Wishing you the best

I don’t know why I went there- call it morbid curiosity- but I wish I hadn’t seen any of it. I am completely triggered and disgusted. How are we supposed to work with our partners to cultivate a loving and kind relationship while men are consuming increasingly deviant pornography? It’s so awful and scary to think that the person I love really doesn’t respect women and gets off on this violence.

God I hated this when I worked in retail and service. Men think being nice mean we wanna smash or is an open invitation to rude comments. Not only men, but women think we are after their men too. I’m trying to pay my rent, not take your trash out.

I had an ex boyfriend do this for me. He really helped me out as I was working a low wage job during my undergrad. My laptop broke and a new one would put me in the position to either not be able to get online school work done at my leisure or be behind on rent. I actually still have the laptop 8 years later (it’s still kicking along okay), so I’m still grateful.

Have you thought about finding an online school? I did my masters this way and it was great. I took one class at a time. Some schools do accelerated programs where you do one class for a few weeks instead of three classes each semester. That way you only have to focus on one class at a time. I was the first to go to college in my family so I didn’t have support from people who knew what to do. It’s very scary to dig yourself out of that mindset where you feel unworthy and afraid of success. I al…

I totally agree. I think a lot of people forget that marriage or having a long-term partner is the joining of two individuals and one can maintain some sense of independence. I wouldn’t marry or stay with someone who wouldn’t support me going back to school or wanting to pick a place on a map and planning a trip with him or my friends. I don’t expect perfection, but I don’t want to miss out on what I want to get out of the little time we have being alive.

Are you saying women over 29 should focus on popping out babies and living for her man? No one is saying don’t ever get married and have children. The sentiment is that a woman shouldn’t live only for her husband. There’s more to life.

I’m the first in my family to have gone to college. I was terrified of college too because I didn’t have any real direction from people that should have been helping (guidance counselors). I’m currently trying to figure out what the line is between having experience with certain scenarios and knowing the outcome and letting my insecurities get the best of me. Something that has helped is asking questions and not being afraid of the outcome. If he’s truthful, good. If he’s lying, that’s not my fault and has no bearing on my character. I think working on understanding I’ve done nothing wrong and there is nothing wrong with ME if a man lies or cheats has exponentially improved my ins…

Yes! Don’t let society and the sex positive movement make you feel like you’re missing out. You’re not. I’ve had one or two really amazing lovers and a couple good lovers because they cared about me. The others were trash and I look back and see how I used them (or rather- let them use me) to make myself feel better because I had low self-esteem.

I struggle with depression and anxiety as well. I think the best response I’ve gotten from a boyfriend is after a anxiety breakdown about something dumb, I apologized and he looked at me and said, “I accept you just the way you are.” That was HV to me.

You can downvote me all you want, but recording this whole scenario and putting it on the internet doesn’t make it true or a realistic expectation for everyone. If it is a real thing- I’m happy for them, but I’m remaining skeptical. We can have high standards while also being realistic. Would I like a surprise visit to France- yes. Am I going to expect this and be pissed if it doesn’t happen- no. I want a man who does what I need and qualify as HVM in MY life.

First, I am going to suggest you learn how to use punctuation. I had to read your post three times to fully grasp what you’re asking. I know I’m not the best writer either, so I’ve been working on that by reading more books and posting more on reddit. Secondly, you didn’t overreact if that was your genuine reaction. You feel sad and ashamed because he hurt your ego and made you feel unworthy of his love because he’s confused about the better choice for him. Make that choice for him and move on. Even if he ‘chose’ you, could you really trust that he isn’t thinking about what ifs or if he’s talking to her? You’re worth someone KNOWING and choosing you every day. Never fight for a man who isn’t sure about you.

In my mid-late 20s I started working to be a better version of myself. Part of that was working to heal emotional trauma. I treated the life-long depression I didn’t know I had. Once I was able to recognize my faults and work to improve them, my entire life improved and I felt worthy of what I wanted, even though I had gained weight and felt a bit insecure about my looks. People like you who rip them apart for bad decision they don’t realize they’re making and make them feel even more unworthy instead of having compassion and understanding to uplift them in their life. Not aligned on the timeline you want commitment. Do you want to be married and he doesn’t- dump ASAP. He won’t change his mind. Do you want children and he’s on the fence- dump ASAP. Basically- If what he wants out of life is different than what you want, neither of you will be very happy with those compromises, so it’s best to find someone who better aligns with your life goals.

I think as long as it doesn’t affect your relationship or your life in a negative way, it’s up to you. I don’t know. I’m skeptical about the validity, but at the same time women are taught we aren’t entitled to our fair share. She absolutely could have just left, or he could have made her feel like she didn’t deserve anything, especially because she mentions she had gone through depression.

The best advice I've received in this realm is,"If you are interested, you are interesting." This mean that asking questions and finding topics to talk about are what make you fun to talk to. You don't have to have a full passport or want to hike every spare moment to be an interesting person. Have an arsenal of topics to talk about before you walk into a date, keep up on the news, local happenings, what you saw on the internet that day (keep it PG). My ex boyfriend of 5 years decided that he didn’t want to get back together after we broke up. I drove 650 miles and visited him for a whole damn week while we were reconciling. After all that effort and him telling me how much he loved me and wanted to marry me, he drops the bomb after I get back home that he changed his mind because he “has so much love to give” and didn’t want to be monogamous. But he also said he saw us getting together down the road. He wanted his cake, the pie, and whateve…

I've had this conversation with two past boyfriends when it came up organically while talking about past relationships and experiences. At first they didn't seem bothered by how many men I had slept with and at the interval which I slept with them, but they both brought it up to use against me in later arguments. I had slept with under 10 people when both instances happened. One guy even tried to use that we slept together after four dates against me like he wasn't there basically calling me a s…

Great quote, and a hard lesson to learn.

I have a couple of male friends since preschool (25+ years ago), and several male friends turned acquaintances from my teens and 20s. I used to be the girl who thought I couldn't get along with women and that is why I had all these men around me, but I now know that the men wanted more than my friendship, and I wanted male attention. After several upsetting experiences where my male friends thought my kindness meant I wanted to fuck them; I find it difficult to believe men and women can have a s…

"I'm sorry you feel like you do everything around here, maybe we should make a chore chart" I make a chorechart. "Having a chorechart makes me feel like a kid"

People are definitely trolling her AMA and downvoting stuff that is neutral. I don’t get it.

Thanks for sharing your story. I’m working on being a better version of myself. Even though I still revert back to appeasing my pickmeisha desire to feel wanted and loved by a man once in a while; we are here to learn from our mistakes and move forward, right? Good luck!

Yes! I do enjoy playing games with my SO or watching him play something new once in a while, but we make sure to do other things as well. He always texts me back and makes sure I feel included. I think that this is one of those things where you have to make your needs and standards clear.

My grandpa called my boyfriend a cheapass the other day for no reason other than to put my man in his place. He’s got my back.

I turned in paperwork to start seeing a therapist. I am also journaling and sketching regularly.

I’m with you on this. I feel like just because a show might show unnecessary sex scenes does not mean throw the whole man away or he’s a PA. If one isn’t comfortable with these scenes, then she is allowed to have that standard; but, I think it’s a little too far for me—Like a lot of the bullet points in this thread. But it’s interesting to see what other people think.

I wholly disagree with those sentiments; however, I am surrounded by a good mixture of people who are atheist. Many have some spirituality, but not in the believing in a higher power sense, more along the lines of being in tune with themselves, other beings, and the universe. Every atheist I’ve known is a genuinely good person, including myself. I’m not sure what you mean by “flaunting” one’s atheism though and how that makes them bad people.

I have the same issues and I've been able to recognize I have the same sentiments because: I am afraid the man will try to use his spending to gain power and control or expect me to reciprocate sexually I deep down did not believe I was worthy of a person spending money on me I grew up poor and my relationship with money is messed up overall If a man loses interest because he paid for a date, he ain't the one As hard as it is, realize that when you spend money on someone, you want to, right? Giv…

For sure. When I was in an unhappy relationship for 5 years, I gained 120lbs. I attributed most of the weight to pacifying myself with overeating. I didn't feel like I could or deserved better, so why not enjoy what I could, which was food and beer? I was super fit and worked out every day when we got together too. After we broke up, I lost 30lbs almost immediately and am still working on losing the rest. Down 50lbs now!

I think the best thing to do is ignore. Nothing gets anyone more than feeling insignificant, right? Don't let him know how he affected you if time has passed, he doesn't deserve that knowledge.

I have a friend where she and I tell each other our goals for the week. We try to hold each other accountable through checking in a couple times during the week, exercising together, and generally being there for each other when we become discouraged. I never thought I would be able to find a wonderful friend like her, and without the work I put in before we met, I don't think I would have thought I deserved a good friend like that.

I met my last boyfriend on Tinder. We broke up a couple days ago because as it turns out, he either never deleted the app or re-downloaded it after he "deleted it" right in front of me.
