If I remember correctly what I heard by Alan Watts, his point ultimately is that you cannot "change" yourself. But that it doesn't really matter because you just have to recognize that you already are everything you wish to be, and you just have to act in accordance to your nature for it to come about, like developing a film.

Yeah, that's what I figured, and what I did. But don't you think a smoother man, with the right approach, would be able to make this work? I'm trying to think of something I could do in the future, if another situation like this arises.

It's not so much that I keep thinking about her (even though I do, because she was seriously amazing), but that I have a nagging feeling that a smoother man would be able to play this right, you know? I keep thinking there's gotta be a way to make a situation like this work, in the future. For example, a magician performing tricks sounds like it could be a good way to get over the group's resistance, and later isolate one of them, but on the downside it could be perceived as too dorky.
