I'd wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment that class is definitely one of the strongest indicators of social status. | -1 | Well said Dr. FiamengoThat's exactly my point, though. These individuals were oppressed based on their class. Men are not oppressed on account of their gender. An individual is not denied his personhood because he is a man, because he is white, because he is rich. It is because they were woman, or their race, or a different class qualifier depending on the times (land owner, Christian vs Nonchristian, American vs Nonamerican, etc). | -9 | Well said Dr. FiamengoI feel you on most of these points, but have some problems with a couple: More men may be the victim of violent crimes, but you're misinterpreting the Violence Against Women Act with such a statistic. Your point would prove valid if it addressed statistics that are relevant to the Act, namely, that Woman on Man violence is higher than Man on Woman violence, or that men suffer from gender motivated violence at higher rates than woman (which you will find just isn't true). It spawns from the reality we live in where women, not men, were treated as second class citizens (some men may be treated as second class citizens, but usually under race/class/non-gender identities).
