I don't want to say how much data is retained, because it varies a lot between carriers. But on the short side it is a lot, on the longer side, it is uncomfortably a lot.

yeah, and they can see the hand offs from tower to tower as well. The record of this is retained for at least a few weeks. The telcos always know where your phone is, after all, they need to deliver a call.

carriers can identify the tower location of where the text was sent. Google and Apple will do the rest for location.
