The French were using it as an import from Islamic law long before Napoleon. One of the Louis' did it, I forget which one. Louis IX? Seventh crusade? Anyway, the UK codified it in the Human Rights Act of 1998.

Many US things, like the structure of congress, are based on UK systems, but many others are based on French principles. This is one of those things that they got from the French. That said, it's been common practice since around the same time, and if nothing else it's been codified in UK law since 1998.

Y'all got me curious. I found this page of 2017 data from the US Census Bureau with xls files to look at. From chart C3, I've crunched some of the numbers into percentages. 73.7million children in the US, 37.6million are male; ages 0-17 Live with mother only: 16.7million (22.7%) of all children, 8.3million (22.1%) male Based on the above, girls and boys aren't too far off as far as the "single mother" statistic goes, both a little over 22%. I did play with the numbers more and I think I found wh…

The process only turned disgusting because of him. Most nomination hearings may be partisan, but are meant to be a full vetting. The only reason his is so bad is because he has so much more baggage and he wont withdraw. Its easy to make a lot stick to a big target.

You still think this is about the rape or he's being smeared. It's not. It's about the way he handles himself in a courtroom. Attorneys have been disbarred for less. If he loses his judgeship, it wont be because of what he might have done 30 years ago. It will be because of the way he acted in this hearing.

The rape allegations honestly don't matter. They're beyond the statute of limitations. The problem for most of us men is that even if we do everything right and can prove the rape didn't happen, the cards are stacked against us. For Kavanaugh, this happened 30 years ago and there's basically no proof left beyond witnesses, so Ford barely has a case. But what does he do? Have a meltdown on the senate floor and perjure himself a number of times. This isn't a trial, this is a job interview. An inte…

Yes, he's a victim. You know who else is a victim? The woman who isn't believed. You know who else is a victim? The children in my analogy. They're all victims. Were they all equally harmed? Not even close. But that does not mean that there is only one true-victim, let alone that I'm claiming that victim is the woman.

Y'know, at first I just thought you were a little extra jaded, but I'm pretty sure you're just trolling at this point. You keep using the word 'victim'. Either you're upset that one poster didn't explicitly talk about men as victims (in a thread about male victims). You're upset that they called women the real victims (still haven't used that word). You're upset that I didn't call the kids victims. Make up your mind. If I dont use the word 'victim' are they victims or not? Until you can figure o…

The only reason we're even still talking about women is because you keep bringing them up! This phrase: I DO feel bad for women who are really raped. No one believes them because of all the liars. In no way implies: It's the notion that the real victims of FRAs are women who were really raped, it's the notion that a man falsely accused is not a victim at all. I get it. You desperately want it to imply that so you can in turn be angry at that implication. But it's simply not there. Stop putting w…

men are the only victims of FRAs But they're not. This isn't men vs women, and if you think it is, you need to check yourself. Many actions, many crimes, affect multiple people and have multiple victims. Yes, the men falsely accused are the primary victims that feel the harshest sting, but if you think that they are the only person affected, then you clearly don't understand what it means to live in the real world. And on the other hand, different groups of people come together to push for the s…

This is an idiotic canard which has no purpose other than to make women the victims of FRAs rather than the men falsely accused. This isn't a race to the bottom to see who's the "real scotsman victim". Pointing out that this affects women as well only serves to help our cause if the end result is to get these false accusers to think twice.

If you've been following the story at all you'd realize that it does need to be clarified there are girls there. As much focus as there is on the separation of families and the child detention centers, people are starting to realize that almost all of the limited photos and videos being released show exclusively boys. Journalists hunting for details are finding that "no one knows" where the girls are being kept. This has spurred child trafficking rumors even higher. So yes, specifying girls in t…

Doesn't matter if the shot was meticulously setup or quickly taken like the OP. Without knowing anything about the photographer or the history of the photo, all we have is the picture. Every photo has a camera angle, and the angle influences the interpretation of the photo. It does not matter if the angle was chosen; it exists, therefore it has influence. When I attach a GoPro to my dog, I'm not conveying commentary on the socioeconomics of China's expansion. As evidenced by the article above, i…

"Pop-science"? Try art instead. In art everything from the lighting to the camera angle changes the tone of a shot. There are entire sectors of the advertising industry based around instantly conveying a message with a single look. Just because you can't comprehend the basics of photography doesn't mean it's bullshit.

But it's still not "sexual harassment". It's regular harassment. EDIT: Good lord, guys. Just because some judges stretch the definition of sexual harassment doesn't mean they all do, or should. Strange. I was under the impression that the prequels were only a travesty to SW fans. Speaking from just my own experience, I saw 1 before watching 4 5 6, and I thought it was a pretty great film. Maybe coming from the outside, I don't see how SW would have hurt her acting career except in the eyes of die-hard SW fans. Thanks for the answer, though. :)

Hold up, SW almost killed her career? How so? When I watch the prequels the only character that turns me off of the film is Anakin (not Hayden, the writing). I recall Padme's character being just fine. Did I miss something, or am I just not familiar with the climate at the time?

Like it would be possible to open up the military to women without lowering standards or creating quotas Oh certainly, at least in my opinion. That said, I've never been in the military and have no idea how the dynamic of an all-male squad changes when a female is introduced. Now hold up. I want to preface by saying that I agree with you that in this kind of situation nobody should be punished. Really, it's dumb that the system works this way. However, the reason this story is here is not because we want this woman to be punished harshly, but instead to point out that men are punished very severely for the same or even lesser actions. Think of the context. There is a picnic area halfway down a bike trail. A biker stops to take a break and if there isn't anyone else there, they probably peacefully look around at the surrounding area, catch their breath, eat some food. They don't just close their eyes and point their head at the ground. You look around at what's there. Perhaps stare at a couple of squirrels chasing each other around the trees. Ah, but most of these are just insults, not sexist insults. Motherfucker and dick, those are good ones. That's what I was missing. Faggot, on the other hand, is against homosexuals, not men. Pussy, while directed at men, is sexist towards women, thus falls in the women category. It was HIS job he was coming back to finish. She had started doing his job.

Whether it's illegal/against policy or not, it's probably best to ask, lest the teacher get angry and fail you anyway. Pretty sure profs have the power to just fail anyone if they feel they shouldn't pass. The trick when asking your teacher is not to say "Hey, can I record the class so I can show how bigoted you guys are in here." Rather present your request to record as a form of taking notes so you can listen to discussion again and absorb the things said in class.

Oh, this made me laugh. I can't tell if you genuinely believe this, or if you're trolling, but it's hilarious. Also, if you're trolling, you're doing it right. The way trolling was intended.

I'm surprised more people haven't realized this. I realize we're small, but we should be supporting gay rights, not only because they deserve equality, but because it can open the door to our own equality. It may be selfish, but if the only people that lose out are extreme feminists, I don't see a problem.

planting a tree, pause Wait wait. This is gay. This is gayer than all the men getting in a big pile and having sex with each other. Ok everyone! Back in the pile!

Meh, perhaps he was having a really good day and didn't want to taint it with an argument. I know some people 'pick their battles' too frequently and blow stuff off that they shouldn't, but sometimes you just can't confront EVERY wrong in the world.

I HOPE it's part of their duties. A media shitstorm could be just what we need.

I completely agree with these, especially the first one. Kids are much more responsive (even in just day to day life) if you treat them as equals. This is doubly true for emergency situations. If you give them a responsibility, such as 'you need to pay attention because you're hurt and this is important', then they often don't want to disappoint since they aren't often given responsibilities. You don't have to expressly state it, just treat them as equals.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
