I don't understand. Your name goes on a list of possible draftees. If the unthinkable happened and a draft was contemplated, whether the targets of the draft are willing comes into play, not before.

Registering for Selective service means nothing. The issue isn't the government knowing which citizens are in a certain age range, they have that covered, the issue is that calling a draft is wildly unpopular and unnecessary. That is why there has not been one for 50 years. If the shit hits the fan so hard there is a future draft, we have no idea who all would be called up. I guarantee female recent vets would be on the list.

If you are doing it willingly, it isn't under threat of imprisonment. And we have not had a draft for men or women in a very long time. Everyone in the military is there because they decided it sounded like a good idea.

There are lots of reasons, interest is one, but even that brings up questions about why. Unless you are going with the concept that it is hardwired 100%, and there is little support for that, then what elements of the society we have created affect those preferences.
