I don’t think so bud. Plenty of very spiritually fulfilled people went without a wife. Jesus, for one.

Afraid books by philosophers aren’t going to help you figure out your purpose or meaning in life. They’re great, obviously, but the best they can offer is that life exists. No one can say why. Figuring out purpose and meaning might BE the purpose and meaning. But here I am, 42, recently divorced and going to seminary to pursue ministry. Purpose and meaning are built in I suppose, but I’ll always swing around to self-doubt and existential dread. What’s the point when we’re all going to die. Being…

I get it. My ex had good health insurance so we were able to afford one. Didn’t help save the marriage but it was eye opening to have a third party sitting there. My ex felt free to speak the truth for the first time in ten years, and also allowed me to react without fear of her leaving the room and shutting down the conversation. A third party kept both of us in check. After the divorce I was able to get a therapist because it was covered under my state welfare. It helped. There’s some really f…

Yeah you’re right. Until you almost kill yourself with maladaptive coping strategies and and are forced to go to a program with a group of other people who avoided feeling their feelings and realize…oh, maybe it helps if we all talk about this shit.

You’re both the problem, sounds like. Have you sought a counselor to help with communication?

Thank you for the encouragement. I definitely need to be better about forgiving myself and filtering out negative or misguided voices, whether from other people or myself. Sorry for your loss. Truly.

Thanks. I’m definitely healing. Changed career paths and am now going to seminary to be an ordained pastor. I’m the oldest student in class so far, but I’m not the first and I won’t be the last. Got a healthy routine, great network of support, and living the best part of my life. One gift of suffering is clarity. I know what’s important now. I know who my real friends are. I know I fucked up, but so did she. I’m not afraid to accept responsibility for my actions, but I won’t wallow in guilt. In …

I did not cope with our son’s death very well. I drank too much, fired therapist after therapist, quit my job in television and started a gardening business that failed, had a lot of misguided anger and didn’t deal with it in adaptive ways. Then when her Mom died I wasn’t there for her. But when her dad was dealing with his grief I thought it would be a good idea to move closer to him so we could all be together, helping each other out. She didn’t tell me at the time, but thought I forced her ag…

This is all good advice. Being on this subreddit helps too. Eye-opening to see other dudes going through the same shit, commiserating and offering support. A lot of love here for people in a lot of pain and confusion. I’m 42, was married for nine years, our son died six years ago and this last Christmas was blindsided by a divorce and she finally let loose with all the resentments she kept hidden ever since our son died. I became suicidal. Which scared me. I gathered enough strength to go back t…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
