This is a great read, looking forward to the reports. My view (as a Catholic convert with dating-age kids) is that you will be successful overall. Catholics are *generally* raised to be marriage-minded, and you're unlikely to find many "don't-need-no-man" types at Catholic gatherings - although it's college so the chance is always there. Their purity can range over the entire spectrum though, so watch carefully if that's a dealbreaker for you.

What the other folks said. Song of Solomon is your friend. Just a note - Catholics aren’t “procreation only”, that’s the fundamentalist protestants. Their “purity culture” is really awful and extremely difficult to set aside once you’re married. We Catholics must be “open to life” at all times (no contraception) but don’t have many restrictions apart from that. Porn, masturbation, and additional people involved are the big no-nos.

The enemy uses sin as a gateway into your head. It doesn’t have to be your sin. Prayer will help here. Your wife has confessed and repented, the right thing to do is forgive, seventy times seven.

In addition to what's already been posted (all great stuff), you might be able to find more information by searching out advice to godparents. It's a similar type of relationship, at least for Catholics. In our tradition, godparents are responsible for ensuring the religious education of the children in question, in the event that the parents fall short or are otherwise unable to do so. My goddaughters go to the same Catholic schools as my children, so it's more of an oversight/encouragement rol…

I get it. The leadership is not the Church though, the believers are. I direct my tithe to my local parish so I know what it’s used for. My family donates time and money to our local pro-life group/center because that’s what God has called us to do. In talking to other Catholics, including a decent number of priests, I believe that most do not support the current Pope’s agenda. We don’t have a mechanism to remove him, so we pray for him as we continue to live our faith. As for the saints (esp. M…

Yes, I’ve read the arguments. It does not really seem to be supported by Scripture. But as it’s not against Scripture either, I’ve made my peace somewhat with it. I was married to a Catholic for two decades before converting, I definitely did my homework and knew what I was getting into.

The two are considered equally. Which is actually an improvement, considering the early Church’s lack of concern with the wife’s pleasure at all. I’ll be honest, this is the one of the biggest things that bothered me when converting. But I comply with the rules, because I agreed to them. I acknowledge that they are not strictly Biblical, but an interpretation of the story of Onan. Personally I think it’s an example of a man-made rule that perhaps made sense at the time, but may not be useful or …

That was one of the “rules” I mentioned at the end of my comment. Probably the one the Church would consider the biggest.

Hey man, I am a convert, and it’s not nearly as bad or restrictive as you would think. I know I get a lot more out of it than I ever did from being raised Methodist. I think very strict evangelical sects have it way worse. Not intended as a slight against any Christian or group of Christians, we are all brothers.

It's actually quite the debated topic among traditional Catholics. Certainly centuries ago there were "Doctors of the Church" who were strongly against it. St. Augustine in particular was quite opposed to any act not strictly for procreation (and even then, he believed children were not strictly necessary because Christians could pass on their faith in other ways) - but he was a also reformed "libertine" who was likely overcompensating in his atonement. However, there is no explicit Church prohi…

This is an awesome explanation. I just want to argue your minor point at the end about Catholics though. There is plenty of room for Catholics to use their own judgement as well. While the Pope's official decrees are supposed to be divinely inspired and infallible, not much of what he says from day to day falls into that category. And "official teachings" can contradict each other, especially over hundreds of years. Take the Church's views on sex, for example. What St. Augustine wrote is a far c…

Thank you for spelling this out. Until fairly recently I too had no ownership of my life. Once I realized this and began making an effort to change it, I have noticed definite shifts in both my actions and the actions of those around me. Those shifts have not always been in a positive direction, but there is always resistance before there is growth. I need to up my prayer game and let go of my ego. Only by submitting to God can I become what I am meant to be.

That is completely insane. Not just the money item, but also the "monitoring of activities, communications, and movements". These things are common sense even in a secular marriage.

This is obviously well thought out. It seems like you could write a book or twelve on this topic. I’ll be checking out all the linked works and posts for sure.

Thanks for this. I'm new here and overwhelmed with information (awesome stuff, all of it). There's no way I can do it all at once, I just have to take it one step at a time.

I’m new here and probably shouldn’t even be commenting, but it does seem like a good group. I’m honestly surprised at the lack of Catholic representation, as we seem to tend more to “trad” than other Christian denominations.

Yes, I do subscribe to those items you mentioned. They are covered well in the works I mentioned also. As a convert I had to be convinced, though. And yeah, by no means was I saying that we should throw out everything by Augustine and Aquinas. Just the sex stuff. It’s not that different than the “revisions” to doctrine that have come with advances in scientific knowledge.

Fellow Catholic here. I'm a relatively recent convert and have done a lot of reading on "church teachings" in general, and teachings on sex in particular. What I've found is that over two millennia of our faith, there have been a lot of different views presented, and a lot of times the Church has come out and said they were wrong about one thing or another. It's a shame that sometimes the undeserving views are the ones that persist. On one hand you have Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, both …
