I'm a grown 32-year-old man who never had a male role model or "big brother figure" to help me feel cared about and secure in my masculinity. It has screwed up my life and my mental health.

Your response here made me so happy man. ❤️ You totally get it. Your daughter is lucky to have a daddy who cares so much about her. You're on the right path, brother. 💪

Very nuanced question, brother. Your heart is in the right place. Do the right thing, and don't care what comments you receive about it. However, I think the problem is that you're doubting whether you're doing the right thing or not. Parents will always make mistakes. We're all human. Parents can only try their best. Be yourself around your daughter, and she'll learn what a real man is. I wouldn't over-emphasize being super sweet and gentle if it's like you're putting on an act for her. Her mam…

Focus on the title of your post: "I want to stay faithful" That's really what you want. Marrying your wife, you promised to be with her for better or worse. Right now she's going through a tough time in her life. Having twins wasn't her fault. Even though you're in your best shape since high school, that's not true of so many other people at your age. Women's bodies are different, and it gets harder to lose weight as the hormonal changes of menopause shift things around. Anyway, I know this is d…

I suppose I just cringe at people thinking of sexual satisfaction/pleasure as a "need." Yes, mankind collectively needs sex for us to continue as a species, but no individual has a "need" for sex. You can live a happy, fulfilling life without it. I just read your other comment about it being a "higher order need." I still would not say that. Humans are social creatures, and so it isn't fair to try to compare the human "need" for social interactions with your so-called "need" for sex. The sexual …

"Needs?" You "need" self-control, man.

I've been lucky enough to have access to an Ergatta rower. Following their preset workouts, it doesn't always let me push myself to my limit. It says my average split is 2:20/500m. My fastest split was 1:17/500m. Great job at being able to do under 2 minutes consistently! I agree with you that longer distances really make it a different beast. BJJ has its ups and downs. It comes with its own mental challenges and physical injuries. I've been eligible to become a blue belt for two months now, but…

Just you taking the moment to write this means a lot. Thanks so much bro. I spend a lot of time trying to break bad habits and better myself. Try to focus on fitness... on the rower and using my dumbells. Picked up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a sport 10 months ago. I like languages and singing and Pokémon.

I've been sad. I'm really sick of being me. I wish I had male friends who care about me.

I agree... an obligatory "sacrifice" is not a sacrifice. To sacrifice for someone else is to love them. It can't be forced.

I understand your anger and your line of reasoning, but it doesn't change the fact that we are men by nature. We should protect the vulnerable, even if they are jerks. I know plenty of women who have made tremendous sacrifices for their families and children. They are very selfless and loving. I don't think it's fair to say that it's virtually always men who self-sacrifice. There are bad women out there just as there are bad men. If you want to use your Jesus example, He died for the salvation o…

Regardless of how b*tchy a woman might be, it doesn't change our nature as men to be protectors. I'd rather give my life in an emergency situation to save them and the children than myself. Or well, at least I like to think so. I understand your frustration though completely. It's so unjust that women want rights without responsibilities. Every right we have requires us to be responsible. And this also hits a nerve with me. As a young boy who watched the Titanic (at certain scenes I was made to …

Nicely written. But I agree with many of the other comments here that the concept of "toxic masculinity" shouldn't be perpetuated. A man can be extremely masculine and toxic or he can be extremely masculine and noble. The toxicity comes from one's character.

Woah. Interesting observation about how these insecurities develop. Thanks for that.

Thanks for your response. Reflecting on all this, I realize there are guys I know who I might look at and not consider them to be particularly "masculine." Yet, they seem to be very confident in their masculinity and not spend any time thinking about it. I'm wondering how much of this depends on our experiences with other males throughout our formative years. So many guys probably feel like guys simply because they relate so much with other men and feel accepted. Other guys have had troublesome …

I hate to admit this, but I am really struggling because I am not proud. I have had bad childhood experiences around males, and these experiences have followed me throughout my life. I have big issues with body image and confidence. I rejected masculinity as a kid because of my experiences, and it's only later while growing up that I realize the void it left in me. I'm trying to figure out how to get healing for this now, but it feels out of my hands.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
