Zelda is Robin Williams' daughter. After his suicide, she was bombarded by trolls posting awful content such as fake pictures of her dad dead, and comments calling her cuss words for being the "reason" her father killed himself. It was ridiculously abusive and affected her very deeply. Fortunately, quite a few people responded and made sure to get Twitter's attention to stop the comments and also so that Twitter can improve policy to help prevent or decrease this kind of trauma from occurring. A…

You're right. Life sucks, why bother doing anything at all? People are gonna always get diseases so no point in health education. Crimes will always be committed, so why bother have any laws or police at all. I'm going to wager a guess that you didn't look at the twitter link, either. It was about how they are refining policies after what happened to Zelda Williams, so that Twitter will be a better environment for everyone. Fortunately, not everyone is completely apathetic about issues that need…

Twitter It happens everywhere. People on this thread who are saying, "where???" Didn't bother to read the article. So I guess my answer is: no, providing specific documented examples and statistics will not make a difference. People will just ignore it an claim the only reality is that which is in their own head.

Yes, true. However my point was that there are people who argue harassment doesn't exist, and there are people who argue that women are not harassed more often than me.

So you didn't read it, didn't look at the specific examples (which was the whole point of this post) and decided to be incredulous and mock it. Guess I have my answer, then... no, having documented specific examples of harassment (and furthermore examples of how much more often it is aimed at women) will not prevent people from claiming, "if I don't see it, it doesn't exist." If someone is dead-set on believing that harassment isn't that bad, doesn't exist, and isn't more prevalent for women, th…

u/jellybeannie: or maybe it's an experience that someone have and feel the need to discuss u/robusta: aka bragsplaining Definition of "bragsplaining": bringing something up for the sole purpose of bragging. There are many reasons why someone might feel the need to discuss a topic: for closure, for emotional support, for clarity, to resolve misunderstandings, etc. The entire field of cognitive talk therapy is devoted to this, although people seek the benefits in casual settings with friends and f…

The article listed specific examples. That was actually the point of this entire post. Did you read the article before declaring how incredulous you are about it? Twitter is another example

If it's generic, then it makes no sense. So you, Robesta, would not brag about getting kicked in the nuts, but you would brag about being harassed? If you find harassment flattering, that's certainly your business, but declaring that's everyone's experience of harassment is projection. I won't waste my time with solipsistic arguments. Declaring your own feelings as if they are everyone's feelings is what's actually self-righteous.

The article is about places in the Internet that are for the general public, such as Twitter, not women-specific places. Having to stick to "women's websites" is like a black person having to drink from a blacks only drinking fountain to avoid harassment, violence or threats. Personally, I get a lot more out of environments where both male and female perspectives are represented, and it's a shame that some men ruin the opportunity for other men and women to interact respectfully.

I am a married woman with sons. I experience sexual harassment at times. When I was younger, I did use sexuality to get an edge at times, although not all the time. Some of it was because i was immature, some of it was unintentional and accidental because certain men gave me the edge without me soliciting it, and some of it was because of a naive perspective that women are supposed to do that. I actively educate my sons about how some women will manipulate them, but more importantly, I teach the…

I prefer not to be specific about my stats. Also, I should clarify... I'm not here to be educated. I am here to explore and examine. There is a subtle difference. Thank you for your enthusiasm and encouragement, though.

Your choice to use the word "you" either means that you accuse me, specifically, of bragging about something, and if that was your intent, then I choose to stop reading and replying to your comments. I won't waste my time with someone who projects things onto me that they have no evidence of. If it was not directed at me, specifically, then what you have chosen to do is to lump me into a ridiculously over-generalized and homogenized perspective that you have about women. I won't waste my time re…

Woah. All day I've been debating on here with solipsistic jerks and I was really regretting checking out this sub. I... I... am actually surprised you got my point. Thanks, buddy. Good mood now :) Waiiiiiit a minute... it's not because I started describing sexually arousing situations, is it? Kidding!!!! But as a side note: in my opinion, I think biology makes it much easier for women to manipulate a man sexually, even if she's not Barbie. I think a guy would have to be an Adonis to do it to a w…

Well, aside from the obvious point that Americans aren't the only people who reddit... Are you looking for a medal? Another user made the point that they were glad they're in a country where it could be worse. You shot that down. The recognition is already there. We've made great strides in racism, gay rights, sexism, harrasment, technology, medicine, etc etc... So if someone wants to raise funds for disease research, do you view it as invalidating the progress that's been made? And at what poin…

Okay, I'm gonna really take you down the rabbit hole now... you got your red pill ready to see the next layer of the matrix? Redpillers tell you "women make this up so that feminists have something to crusade against" so that Redpillers will crusade against women who say they're sexually harassed. But no... that can't be true, can it? Redpill say sexual harassment isn't true, and redpill makes me feel good, so I believe redpill is true and women lie.... and are you in the matrix or not? So if in other countries or eras it was common to kick a guy in the nuts every hour with a steel toe boot, but you get kicked in the nuts twice a month and only every other time is with a steel toed boot, you should STFU because that's bragsplaining? Most women don't talk about this stuff as hyperbole. The redpill circles you run in just make it seem that way. Seems like an ad hominem argument to me.

When I was a freshman in college, years ago, I had an assignment on racism. I had grown up in an all-white neighborhood. Even at my college, I had to seek out an African American to interview. She was confused why I sought her out, and I explained that I was doing a paper about a novel with racism in it, but I was going to write about how racism doesn't exist anymore. Since she was black, I wanted a quote from her to make it credible research. I was so confused by how pissed off at me she was. J…

Okay, I understand what you're saying, so let me make a key distinction in the concept of attractiveness. There is a difference between looking neat & clean vs. being sexually desirable. Sex sells. That's why some women use it to their advantage, and it's why some men use it against other men (an example being a man who owns a Hooters and is fully aware of what exactly is earning him the big bucks.) I actually don't have a problem (in general) with knowing sex sells and using it to your advantag…

Lol, okay. You never know. Plus, your username could be either sarcastic, or it could be ironically sarcastic. Never know! I think (2) should be for when people make statements such as "studies have shown that XYZ" or statements that use words like "all" or "none" or "more than half" ... or any other statement that implies a person is somehow omniscient and is an expert. Otherwise, I think it's fine to say, "in my experiences, all of the women I've dated have been overly emotional and manipulati…

It's so much more nuanced than that. Telling someone "be brave" is just as lazy and shallow as saying, "well, just don't get married." They're equally condescending and dismissive.

Your first paragraph wasn't helpful. That's like saying, "It's because I'm an anarchist, man!" If you're trying to convince me that you're self absorbed, callous, and proud of it... that only tells me that you're desperately trying to project a rebel, badboy persona and it's a waste of my time to talk to you, because you're going to be too fixated on maintaining appearances to have any kind of meaningful dialogue. Or, if you're attempting to make damn sure that I don't try to make emotional appe…

If you can, I'd like to address this in general terms, rather than in the military specifically (but still include the military). The male standards make sense because they draw a line that prevents excessiveness. Short hair draws a line that will prevent outlandish hairstyles, or dreadlocks that haven't been washed in forever. No earrings prevents huge spacers in the earlobes. I don't even have to give examples for you to imagine an excessive or disturbing tattoo. Why does excess matter? Why is…

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not. I'm not here to play Mortal Kombat. I'm here to deepen my understanding of human perspectives. I'd actually like to see guidelines that discourage arguing purely for the sake of "winning" otherwise it's just like watching a couple for drunk angry assholes shouting at each other and ignoring each other for sport. I don't enjoy drama just for drama's sake. That's what reality television is for.

I don't see empathy as a miracle cure. I'll phrase this in a pragmatic way you might appreciate: empathy is a tool to make discussions more productive. I phrased it that way because I have found an aspect of you I empathize with. I absolutely have my judgements about you for approaching things in such a pragmatic way, and I'd even go so far as to say I have ethical and moral judgements about it. Regardless, I empathize. The world will never ever be full of hand-holding and "kumbaya" and perfect …

I am questioning why it is considered professional behavior, in the same spirit of the comic that points out how a lot of people casually disregard a lot of other "acceptable" things which are actually objectifying. I do appreciate that it's not mandatory in the military (although it is actually mandatory in some places), but in the spirit of this comic, challenge what "just is" and ask yourself why exactly a woman wearing mascara and lipstick is more professional than a woman without it.

It's defensive because you said "you are reduced to a stereotype." Who? Me, or you? If you have already decided my stance because you've stereotyped me, then I'm not going to waste any more time replying to you or reading your responses. If you feel you are reduced to a stereotype, then you're being defensive because you've made an assumption. In your response about my comment about empathy, I think you don't really understand what empathy is. The things you feel I "need" to understand are part …

Thank you so much. It's been bothering me how so many people and so much of the media thinks they're all suddenly expert psychologists. It's spreading like wildfire that he was bipolar, and it just hurts my heart that his legacy is now going to be tainted with rumors. I'm not saying it's shameful to be bipolar, and perhaps he was, but there are several types of depression. Just because his comedic style appeared very manic doesn't mean that's actually what was going on. It's dangerous to so casu…

I glanced at r/alreadyred, but my stomach got queezy. I don't mean that as an insult. I'm just honestly communicating how I'm feeling. Please understand that there is so much on r/trp that totally, and utterly ruins my day. It makes me ashamed of people, both women and men. It makes me feel angry, and I lose faith in humanity. If you're afraid of "divorce rape" or walking in the dark and want to avoid them, that's your business. I don't judge you. I am terrified of blowing out my bad knee for the zillionth time, so I sit in the lodge and miss out on the "fun" my friends have skiing. I was reacting to your comment as if it was general advice for all people. Dude, you're like super defensive and you don't even know me. The whole reason I came to this sub was to challenge stereotypes. Maybe that's something you should challenge about your own perspectives. Don't just assume everyone is narrow minded and out to get you. I was pretty active on both of the WBC amas, not because I wanted to be convinced "god hates fags" but because I was genuinely interested in understanding more about them. I still disagree with them, but I learned a lot. Changed the wa…

I actually think everything you just wrote is relevant, including the paragraph about how redpill originated and how the sub reddit is essentially a locker room. Can you elaborate on that? (I'm being serious). And if that post was a troll post, then why wasn't it taken down, and why is there so much participation on it from redpillers validating it? Unless you believe all of them are trolls. If r/redpill is a locker room overrun by trolls, that is actually pretty relevant, don't you think? It so…

That's a pretty angry-pants response and is really generalizing everyone who could possibly participate on PDD. Since you have these black and white presumptions, you just talk AT people. That aspect of you -- that I don't respect. If you were willing to have a two-way conversation, I absolutely respect your feelings and ideas. The first part of your second paragraph makes no sense. Perhaps a typo? Fun fact: did you know the Westboro Baptist Church members don't actually care if people are saved…

Very little relevance according to you. You're saying RP'S own introductory pages describing the sub are hogwash? I think the only way this can truly be neutral is if the mods take ideas from this thread and write it themselves. The descriptions aren't what you believe or wish or need for your favorite sub to be, it's what the sub actually is. Not my perspective vs your perspective... but what the mods of TRP have stated it is about, and that includes posts that follow suit with what the mods ha…

Have you ever heard someone speak about a woman as though she's an object? C' mon, man... are you telling me that women want to be treated like human beings Don't throw a dumb, generic platitude at me. How am I supposed to get her wet, then? In all seriousness, though, I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage for a man to speak up like that. In a way, men (the "not all men" men) are victims of the sexual harrasment depicted in the cartoon. In some workplaces, guys are practically bullied …

a man who is successful in his financial and romantic endeavors Yeah, I think that's extremely relevant. The fact that you assume everyone knows exactly what a "strong male role model" means you assume TRP definition is the only definition. I think it's actually pretty key to highlight what kind of man, specifically, is considered by RP to be ideal. That point alone demonstrates clearly to any newcomer a central tenant of RP ideology. If you truly want to honor the request for a neutral descript…

I think that emotionally healthy people (both male and female) don't view it as if money is some kind of reward for being married. It is what it is, whether the couple is broke, middle class, or ridiculously wealthy (and all points in between.) A wealthy person might want to be married might have to choose between continued career success, or being with the person (perhaps because of geographical location, the person's health, or other shared goals such as having a family with a stay-at-home par…
/r/PurplePillDebate13/08/14 03:48 AM

I think a definition of what constitutes a "strong" male role model is pretty important. Also, if you leave out "Game" and attitude about feminism, you're leaving out the biggest things discussed (and what makes people the angriest). And how can someone be a former blue-piller if that sub was created to mock RP?

No worries! Your comment was still right, in spirit. All kinds of depression can lead to suicide, and all of it is bad. I've just been on a stupid, fruitless crusade to stop the interwebs from making his tragedy an assumption. :) thanks

People assume he was bipolar because his comedy was so manic-like. The only thing we can reasonably assume was that there was some kind of depression. No offense, it just bothers me that the media implies bipolar as if we can all just "diagnose" him.

I'm not going to argue about alimony. I have mixed feelings on it. However, I do feel like this article put some intentional spin to Robin's suicide. there were clearly other issues going on And yet the author fixated on details about finances, which gives the reader a very skewed impression. Maybe money woes killed Robin Williams, maybe not. Maybe it was a piece of a bigger puzzle. It's disrespectful to make assumptions and then present it as if "ah ha! That's what he was feeling!" In the USA, there are three branches of government. The President does have some unilateral power in some areas, but the 3 branches exist to temper his power, just as the POTUS tempers their power. Some would argue that the media is almost a 4th branch. I think every family has different structures for who specializes in what. Absolute, equal sharing of all decisions isn't possible... and also isn't healthy. The best part of marriage is that there's a mutual respect and shared sense of power/res…
