Which part did you expect? The part about the assault statistic or the straw man rubbish part? I saw the original post as some nice wishful thinking, maybe not strawmaning. However I think it is correct to point out that males are much more likely to be assaulted.

They are having the student orientation here at Texas Tech in Lubbock, one thing I was happy to see was that they were giving equal enforcement to keeping the girls out of the boys' temporary dorms as they do for the reversed situation.

What I say to them is this; the entire reason that black history month, black entertainment channel and the such are around doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact I am glad they exist, and don't see how people would think otherwise. However, since some people claim "all the other months are white history month" then I want to name them as such. Either take away the name for black history month, so we can all just know that it is black history month, or name the other months accordingly. Thi…

As long as the doctor/legislature isn't doing it to be spiteful, I see no problem. The taboo of getting one's private areas examined by medical professionals baffles me.

Most definitely, despite what people seem to say, these exams are there for a reason. I went in and had it done, and discovered I had a bacterial mass since birth. A regiment of antibiotics and I was completely healthy, not only would I encourage people to have their bodies examined by doctors, I wish it were more commonplace.

I disagree, and here is something I posted to a similar discusion "I am completely against the whole thing, and am circumsized. As I've said before, i'm not angry or upset that I am cut, I am upset that I was cut. What I mean is, the results of the action don't really make me angry. The fact that the action was done and no one thought I had rights is what makes me angry. Honestly I don't see how any male could think otherwise unless they were holding religious rights over the rights of a child."

The rest of the post was a glaring peek into the hypocrisy that many men face on a daily basis. I'm not disagreeing with you that s/he (I don't assume gender here, and I don't claim mine so that people think I am trying to use it as an argument winner) looks like a total asshole. But for someone who is forced to live with this hypocrisy day in and day out, and speaking against it making them misogynist; seeing someone else do it is indeed empowering.

Honestly, I don't think it will matter much. Take a similar situation in which a feminist rally had a speech which opened with a joke demeaning of men. Even if the message was blatantly offensive, anyone who complained would just be told that "the rest of the message was empowering and positive" and to promptly stop bitching. This sub will always be targeted for selected quotes that are made by hateful jerks, the best we can do is just not give them our attention, upvote the good ones, and anyon…

This is why I think the comment was upvoted so much, you may not like the answer and frankly neither do I. The extreme hyperbole in the first line was probably uncalled for (I honestly have no idea who Ayatolla Khomeini is in any detail) and makes his (?) comment look foolish. However, those that were already in a like-minded state looked past it and saw the rest of the comment was very satisfying and upvoted. Do I hate it when this happens? Absolutely, anyone who spews hatred over an entire gro…

There are times when you are calling someone out on stuff like this to just be a jerk, either because you are a troll or are bitter inside. But when people post this kind of blatantly false stuff, and others flock to it like flies to honey, it needs to be called out on.

I see many comments on here and everyone has their own answer, but here is mine and it's short. While, without a doubt, both movements have members that harm the other gender with either hate, a lack of empathy, or whatever; feminism has these people in places of power that actively harm people through lobbying and legislation, the MRM doesn't.

Actually no, what I mean is this; their view is that when there is a female victim, reddit will blame her for what she wears, how she acts, etc.... But when a male victim comes along, misogynyst reddit gets all up in a huff. You can see why this is absurd, because the mere idea of a male victim getting as much empathy as a female one is enough to make you scratch your head.

The simple answer? If LPS were legalized, it would make more of the responsibility of child rearing lay on the single mother. Feminism is hellbound on expanding the choices for women, but they aren't always wanting to bear the responsibility for those choices. They have this mentality that single-motherhood is empowering and difficult. And that is.... well because it is supposed to be difficult, there is a reason it only works when the government subsidizes it.

This is just my take on the situation, but here it goes. A large number of men who aren't don't mind that they are cut also don't mind that they were cut. And it usually turns out that the ones who have nothing against being cut will argue against the rights of a baby boy. I too am cut, and I don't mind that I am cut now. Do I wish I was uncut? Hope the reception was warmer than I have experienced, congrats on the whole thing though. I once did a study on how quick students would 1) become suspicious of "misogyny" and 2) become actively offended by giving a 5 min speech that went from praising feminist movements to criticizing it. Turns out the time needed for a sample size to become hostile is quite short!

See, where I am on the whole thing is this: Instead of sticking to the idea of "what penetrates", redefine rape to what it should actually be "The non-consensual engagement in a sexual activity that is forced on the victim by one or more parties." Some people say that is sexual assault, and should be "less" repulsive than rape. To them I say fuck you, a child (or adult, whatever) who is assaulted this way suffers even after your parsing of words makes light of it.

I think the argument they will make is that women do not "rape" as far as penetration goes, therefore they had no part of their body going into the victim, therefore there is nothing to cut off. I find the argument that the child's rights trump the rights of others to be very.... strange. I say this because the only rights the child has are the ones the mother decides it has, will it have a right to live? Only if the mother chooses to bear it (as it should be). The issue I have with the argument is that people are all in support of making the child's rights secondary to the mother's, but the father's are so far out of consideration that even bringing it up is met with ridicule.

In my opinion, men who are "feminists" in the sense that they lay claim to the label simply for the namesake respect women less than many people on this forum. Feminism does more coddling and infantilizing of women than egalitarianism does; take a look at GWW's recent blog post on how women have no responsibility after a man hands them a drink, I think it raises a very good point about how feminism takes responsibility away from women, and with it goes respect and power.
/r/MensRights19/02/12 02:04 AM
2

That is usually good grounds to assume the person who is making the argument is misinformed... at best. Judging the past by today's standards is very touchy, it usually produces sketchy results. Example of what I am talking about: Yes men have had more power throughout history, but with this power came absolute disposability to the point where lives would be cast away in ways modern society would (or should) abhor. I'm not saying it balances out, things like this can't be measured so finely, but…

It is very telling to me that you feel that way. The reason I take exception to that line of thinking is this: You just assumed that anyone who disagrees/is against feminism is male. Some of the most prominent MRM people are female. This isn't an attack of your character, just a criticism of the ideas you (apparently?) subscribe to. Feminism teaches that men are the enemy, this is false on so many levels.

Reddit's thoughts on r/mr are drastically skewed. Yes you will find some asshats that just behave like trolls, but most of the people here aren't like that.

I agree, the fact that you have to shout to be heard doesn't mean you have to drown out the people who have been hurt. It's a shitty situation, but I just believe that feminism (the belief, not necessarily all the people) is impeding progress more than it fosters it.

If feminism would not corner the market on gender discussion, this kind of problem would not exist. When anyone brings up the topic of gender, society almost always thinks that Feminism is the only positive view to be had, and anyone other is misogynistic and bigoted. When I can freely speak about men's issues without the stigma that comes with it today, I will not have to speak about it in feminist discussions. As it is now, they have monopolized gender issues to the point that you have to scre…

I have a question for any other identified (as in people know you are a woman when they read your posts) mens' right supporters. Do you feel more secure, or less afraid of backlash, in your statements knowing that people who would say "You are just a man and have no say." can't say this to you? I faced a similar situation in middle school once, except the two girls that were on the other side just seemed to have it out for me. Okay, but I don't think feminists will like that idea... it gives the man too much freedom in his choice. Seriously, that isn't a joke. If men had the option to opt out like that, the vaaaast majority would do so, and single motherhood wouldn't be subsidized like it is with child support.
/r/MensRights12/02/12 07:13 PM

I don't quite understand what you mean. You say "There should be child support..." For parents who want to have a child, but don't get along well together I agree. But for a man, because if the woman doesn't want it she has plenty of options, who doesn't want the responsibility, rewards, or consequences of parenthood there should be no child support.

There is an excellent video about this by girlwriteswhat on youtube, I believe it is this one http://www.youtube.com/user/girlwriteswhat?feature=watch#p/u/6/UFYxlmRRnkw To summarize, and this is the point I took from it, we talk about the rights that a child has to parenting/support/etc... but the thing is, those rights are decided by the mother. It is harm because it is the irreversible removing of a part of the human body that does not to be removed. All medical arguments in favor of it have been disproven; there is no reason to do it other than religious/aesthetic desire. The common misconception about gender roles is that they were forced on women by all men. This is definitely not the case, as gender roles were pressed on women and men by society for the good of the species. Anyone who doesn't see that this was necessary for early-history mankind is wrong at best. That being said, the fact that it carried on for so long wasn't the fault of men either; it was the fault of the wealthy and powerful. Women were possessions, men were disposable. Both choices sucked.

I am going to forego any subjective arguments and only state factual ones. There are feminists in power who create/lobby for laws that unjustifiably hurt men. Many of these feminists, who are in power remember, are bad people. An argument 'good' feminists like to use is NAFALT, instead of standing up against those bad people. Having read through the article, and I do cede that it has some definite feminist bias to it, I will say that if you leave out that one example it is not bad. Is it because people here go against the societal norm that men should "man up" and deal with their issues rather than discuss them? Well if that's the case I hope you will try to change your view. It isn't a parody, these are real issues and this is a place to discuss them. There are people on here (and a…

Not going to call you concern troll or anything, I like to think I'm better than that. But what you are saying is going to be true of any group that is passionate about its cause. I'm not defending it, or saying it excuses the fact it exists; the only real thing you can do is make sure you hold yourself to better standards and try to encourage others to do the same. Bringing it up will usually only fan the flames.

To be fair, I don't think Celda was being a weasel about anything. Simply not wanting to scour the internet for proof shouldn't start anything malicious, it just means that you don't believe the claim, and they can't push it any further without backing it up (Which Celda hasn't seemed to do).

I will look it up, I haven't read any of Farrel's works.

It wasn't that I hadn't met individuals who had done this before. It was the fact that nearly the entire group of people who consider, and pride themselves on being "enlightened" thinkers all can do this so brashly

Girlwriteswhat has an excellent video on this, so I will direct you there ( http://www.youtube.com/user/girlwriteswhat?feature=watch#p/a/u/2/gekyg7yy4Dc ) But if you don't want to watch (which I highly recommend you do) there was the recent instance "The Egyptian Woman in the Blue Bra" where there was much violence against men who were protesting and it was situation normal. Then, when a woman was caught on camera suffering the same as the men, to the point that her wardrobe "malfunctioned", the…

That kind of attitude is just treating the symptoms and not the cause. You are scooping water out of a sinking boat at half the rate it enters. The only kind of advice I can give with dealing with people, not only feminists, that will only help others if it benefits them in some way is to be extremely patient and try to point out the hypocrisy of their ideas. There is a very good chance you will not convince the person you are arguing with, but hopefully someone who is listening will realize tha…

I agree, while I usually end up with a massive eye-roll 5 minutes into going anywhere SRS related. Reading the linked thread was actually not bad, as I saw only a few misuses of moderation power but not much else.

I just want to clarify, I don't think that people who would want to go topless should be forced not to. The point I am trying to make is that if this were commonplace, I think it would be abused more than it would empower anyone. And generally in locker rooms, the idea is that they are all there and people will be naked some times, big deal. Most people really hate the guy that walks around showing himself off; this is not anger at a lack of shame, it is anger at a lack of humility.

Well what I think would happen is the "pretty" people would laud around with their new freedom, and the "non-pretties" would feel worse than they already do. This will lead to problems for both males/females. Of course, all this is based on my world-view that most people are shallow and superficial. Call me cynical, but it's just the way I see it; not saying everyone else is wrong.

Can we all agree to try and respond more like white_cloud to controversial issues from on now? I am glad to see someone constructively adding criticism instead of demanding downvote brigades. Behaving this well will not only make MR look like a better place, but (just maybe) help some people from the opposite side realize that creating turmoil won't bring them the satisfaction they wanted.

I don't think our society is grown up enough to handle this kind of behavior in public yet, speaking from America here. Women/girls (there are equivalent male pressures, but you will see why I say females exclusively in a moment) are under enough pressure to look like the pretty and unrealistically barbie-esque models already; do you think this would decrease if these already beautiful models went around topless? I think this would cause more problems for women/girls than it would solve. On the …

Yes, some isolated cases are used to discredit more than they should. But are you saying those isolated cases aren't absolutely infuriating, at best, to those who are vulnerable to them? It's not hard to understand why people are so passionate about these isolated cases.

I think it would be a better case if the politician had said something along the lines "Pick yourselves up by your bootstraps. It isn't hard, I did it myself." when the politician clearly hadn't.
