Even when allowed in they still faced discrimination. In this specific case the topic was about the gender of filmmakers the Oscar nomination committee subjectively chooses and you brought up the relative objective performance of men of different skin colors in the NBA. It's just not a relevant comparison to the topic at hand. Something is stopping them, either lack of interest, fear of the unknown, social norms, etc... It's a tricky issue to solve as it's entirely a cultural problem, and it's a complex one.
