The high heels thing is jarring. You're running textbook pua material on someone who is not an ideal target. Remember the principles - not the script. Good luck. Edit: Also, many Japanese have little concept or appreciation of sarcasm. Tread carefully.

Laugh. "We'll talk in a minute, sweetie. Wait your turn." Keep focus on HB7. "Hey, I'm dontboreusgettothe. How's it going?"

To be fair to you, how could you have anticipated such a bizarre text message in response? You may well have been complacent, it's still no excuse for her behavior.

What do you see other people doing when listening? It can be a fun game to observe people. Try to find something that's comfortable for you.

Logistics, man! Have an exit strategy. Great work, glad you had fun.

First off, great work! The thing that was most worrisome to me was it sounded like you were following her around and prolonging the interaction past what she was comfortable with. Don't chase them. It makes you look weak and desperate. You've got places to be, too. You're a cool guy with cool things to do. You don't need to follow after her.

You really know how to sell a story in the title! I'll make you a bet. Submit this same thing with a different title, and you'll actually get responses. Something like "[FR] First field report, and K-Close!" You may think that couching your words in apologetic language is going to help soften any criticism or rejection, but what it really does is turn people off from reading it. Why would I want to wade through a bunch of sentences of low self-esteem to get to the actual story? Just tell me the …

The Angel Goddess routine was a fun read. The stuff that treads the line for them where they are wondering if they may in fact be talking to a crazy person... lots of fun. Like the movie star/homeless person thing from Arrested Development.

Sounds like you've got great raw materials to work with, and once you get this figured out you'll be a force. So you're not able to initiate dancing with any girls? One thing you can try is a bit of push/pull - scoop someone up, then push them away. Then bring them in a bit later.

Terrible game - rejecting the name thing and then throwing it right back at her? Weak. And obnoxious. Rejecting it and moving forward with the conversation will actually help: "I'm eehcekim, and unless you tell me otherwise, for the rest of the night I'm calling you Jessica. So, I was just talking to [proceed with some story, do a funny opinion thing, whatever]"

I know the feeling. So one night I was out with a skinny ballet dancer. We go back to her place, get to her room, hanging out, and she then proceeded to tell me how she knew elvish. A spoken and written demonstration followed. Later she brought out a small velvet bag... and pulled out her set of multi-sided die. It was surprising to say the least. I told her, "I'll bet there are guys on the internet who would absolutely love you." I was not into it - just not my scene.

Is it just me, or is the formatting on this making it annoying to read? I don't see how you're ruining other people's lives. Are you being dishonest? If you're a man of substance that women want to be with, of course they'll be sad to lose you.

Great FR. Inspired stuff. Love this: if you want to hang out with us you have to pay for your own part. Nicely done. Were you just sitting in awkward silence, or did you go back to talking with Naga?

Is it just the two of you? Lead her, but don't force anything. Not sure about kino on hikes, but it seems like there's ample opportunity. If there's a chance for you to bring along some little surprise (tasty food? homemade trail energy bars?), that could be a dhv that you're thoughtful. Some girls really respond to a prepared guy - I heard a glowing story from one woman who talked about how a guy had an umbrella during a sudden rainstorm and that's how she knew she was with a real man.

First of all this story is quite funny. Secondly, you shouldn't have apologized or let it shake you, even though it is weird. You're chasing them at the end, and that doesn't look good at all. I would have tried suggesting a group date. Be fun - "well clearly you both are cool people. Let's hang out. We're going to have the best story to tell our friends." If they think you're being creepy, say it's platonic and act like they're the creepy ones and take yourself off the table - "Well clearly I'm…

Geaux and Brigante offer good advice. You should also not always hang out with guys who limit you - go and generate a new, distinct social circle as well. That's an opportunity to grow into who you want to be rather than devoting time to people who want to keep you as you are.

You keep saying you're so busy. What are you busy with? Is there a way you can integrate her into it? Piggybacking onto events is useful - I spent one night out, got about numbers, invited them out to a friend's party at a club that weekend, and with flakes and plus ones brought in 8 new girls. Incorporate these kinds of things into your lifestyle - even if it's not a full-fledged party at your place, getting a group together for a night out is readily doable.

"you liked my friend better than me that's why you talked to her first." Wow, that could be obnoxious over and over again. I'm sure some guys respond to that kind of thing, too.

Good stuff. I totally understand your internal conflict about not wanting to crush that poor guy. Loved the part about leading the conversation about home in the Philippines. You lived in Japan for a while, right? What are good ways to joke with girls (or guys) there? My understanding is that they have very little appreciation or understanding of sarcasm, so dry humor doesn't necessarily connect.

Perhaps agreeing and amplifying - That's great, you want to show her a good time, right? talk to friend - is HB doing a good job of taking you around tonight? well, clearly she needs a tour guide (or some other joke). Pivot to how do you guys know each other, where is she going back to, etc.

A few thoughts on that - Lolita is not a good choice... you should have been reading something different, man. Last week I didn't even have to be reading for people to open me. Just having the book on the table or in my hand while I was standing gave them something to click with. "Oh, that looks cool, how is it?" - boom, wide open set. So you can use it as a prop of sorts, but I hesitate to mention that way because I'd hate the takeaway to be "BRING BOOK BITCHES LOVE BOOKS." It's something I'm a…

Are you the kind of person who only wants what she can't have? That would be unfortunate. Regardless, keep doing what you've been doing - be approachable, initiate conversation with people you have an interest in, and give things a chance to work. RedErin's advice is good - date people who know what they want (and that you're interested in). The two shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

You seem fun and cool. Move on and find other guys. As far as this guy, do whatever it is you want, and don't be dependent on him. He doesn't have his intentions figured out, and there's no need for you to waste your time on someone else's confusion. So go off, have fun. It's ok.

What is your experience with these kinds of people? Don't get sucked into their frames and let them dominate you. Push/pull them. Confidence and vision trump all. Be strong enough to say "no." Kino matters. Also, this "it's good that you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk" just seems cliche and juvenile. I get where you're going with it, and that's fine. Personally, I wouldn't readily go for either of those as they are basically name calling... but it could work to do something like "Hey, [name]." Make sure you have his and everyone else's attention. One way is to stick up for someone else who is trying to talk. "That's great, but I'm actually interested in what so and so has to say." You neuter the loudmouth, and the person you indicate (guy or girl, doesn't matter) appreciates you for drawing them in. You're directing the focus of the conversation without needing to monopolize it. Worst case, start side conversations, draw a few others in. Be interesting and engaging with them, and it will deflate the other guy. It's a passive-aggressive d…

Did you spend any time talking with the friend earlier? Usually you want to win over her friends before isolating. What happened at the end? What did she do to create a negative vibe? If she's just being a grump you could try something like "Hey, I know you need to get going soon, but my girlfriend is trying to get my number, so it will be a sec."

1) What's the worst that could have happened if you'd tried? 2) Are you familiar with number closing strategies? Read up a bit and find a segue that works for you. The more you are confident and comfortable with your asks and your conversation, the more your target will be, too. Great! That's an excellent skill to have. First, you don't have to use everything for cold reads. Use the information you observe to help attune you to the dynamics of the group you're interacting with. It can be enormously useful... do it right and you'll come across as a very comfortable longtime member of the group. As far as cold reading: Find a way to spin the negative. It's got to be relevant to the thread of the conversation. I have a friend who is a fairly well-known artist who does this really well - he asks great thoughtful questions and doesn't do a whole lot of talking himself. He's a total natural. Here's the thing: I would have no trouble dismissing a random question about what kind of tree/animal/superhero I would be (because it's jarring and I generally don't care), but I'd have a much harder time saying "I don't know" to something pertinent to what …

The big answer to take from this thread is we don't know. We don't. You should go to counseling, and find out if couples counseling is a good idea. You are not going to find good free help on the internet. We don't know you or your situation, and you don't know us or if we have any idea what we're talking about. I don't actually have anything specific in mind for myself, but I could imagine this being an important delineation (for any relationship, really). You write well, and I was curious how you approached the question. There's a difference in being confident and nonreactive, and submissively nonreactive. It's important to know how and when to say no. If you never assert boundaries in a helpful and effective way, you run the risk of falling into being not a nice guy, but a pushover.

There was a study released a couple years ago that looked into this very subject. Participants rated profiles with too few or too many friends as less attractive than otherwise identical profiles. First rule: talk to people. Don't seem needy, don't look like you have an agenda. Just talk with people. Eventually, organize an outing after class. Once you see each other socially, that's enough of an investment to start.

Sounds like you were pushing her too hard. That is seriously weird that you would set it up so that if she loses a bet, she ends up at your place. It's creepy and has all sorts of bad connotations. Plus, it's your first date with someone you met on the internet - she tells you she's a virgin - She needs to feel safe. You're pushing to bring her home that same night... From what you've indicated, it sounds like you were way off on calibrating her comfort level. She should want to close you. It's …

What's your kino been like? Clearly for whatever reason she's not comfortable with you yet, or you haven't escalated properly. If she has something deeper at work like religious standards, then you should probably move on, but otherwise it sounds like it may still be workable.

Yeah, don't get too inquisitive on logistics - where her doctor's appointment is and all that. That's pushy, weak, and potentially creepy. Meet her at the coffeeshop, have a backup place to bounce to afterward if things go well. Dessert shop, live music venue, place for a walk, bar, whatever.

Just for the record, you've gotten some great advice and attention on your post. Be honored. The only thing I'd add is something very simple - what stopped you from a k-open on your date? You can set the tone right from the start. It's a cliché saying, but attitudes really are contagious - the more comfortable and confident you are, the more she will be. Had a girl try this with a buddy of mine last night. Just say no. It's a very strong response. You are someone whose time is valuable, who makes plans, and who is not going to waste your time going to a place on the off-chance the girl might be working there. If you're leaving town, try using that - put a time constraint on your availability. It may heighten things, or not. But it's better than lying to her just to be "nice".

I don't know why people have a hard time articulating it. There are tons of great guys out there who for whatever reason have a more difficult time meeting great women. Do not ask. Don't ask. Go be amazing with her, do amazing things with her, get her wanting you, and it will happen. Lead her. It definitely sounds like she's wanting you to step up. So step it up. There is no point in asking without having established the attraction.

I don't like your pet peeve in this case. Clinical anxiety is outside the purview of this advice. Why is that hard to accept? Most people don't have actual social anxiety, and if they do, they should get professional support, not just from strangers on the internet. Wow. If you want our advice, at least have the courtesy to use paragraphs and capital letters to make it readable... You asked her if she wanted to come up? That's not at all how you should have handled that. Try for a Round 2 if you can, otherwise you may have fumbled it on the 1 yard line.

It's not just about kino. Were you creating attraction, or just making her laugh? You sound young, and if she is too, that could play a part. Maybe she wasn't that into you, or maybe you didn't escalate things effectively. Maybe she could tell that you were trying to make a move, or she warms up slowly and you just need to keep building comfort and attraction. Just don't force anything - it will be awkward, weak, and desperate. She'll lose interest and close up. As far as the car thing, it's ver…

Sure! Those are signs that they have a certain openness, but should he just hone in on that sole demographic? The last smoker I was on a date with was a girl in the Midwest. She asked me what the most scandalous thing I'd ever done was. I came up with some response, and turned the question to her. She replied, "Hmm, that's tough. I'd have to think about it. Maybe the time I did bondage porn?" And that was just the tip of the trouble iceberg.

Sounds promising - there's a lot you could do with that, it's very flexible. If it feels right with a particular person, wave them over to you. You're practically reeling them in. There's the old trick of having your wing stand behind the girl, so you're actually just waving to him. She then realizes you weren't just being friendly toward her and is mildly embarrassed, and you have a great opener.
