Saying what I want to her even if it involves offending her— I.e. “disrespecting her” doesn’t matter if it’s the truth. Judging people based on their character. Being more straightforward in general.

Very true. Thanks for sharing & being honest about what you’ve dealt with. Once the narcissism kicks in, I get angry very fast.

I’d love to give it a read. Looking for more books to check out while the virus stuff is going on anyway.

Her and I had a way too involved relationship when I was younger (definitely a Mama’s boy). But after me feeling frustrated w/ girls (again and again— at the time I didn’t understand them), I started looking at my own life and the people around me. I suppose I saw that she didn’t really have my best interests in mind. I think the relationship I want with my mother is for her to care & check in w/ me, but not in a way where her life is dependent on mine or interwoven with mine in any way. Her cur…

I know. It’s probably bc she doesn’t respect him or he doesn’t set boundaries...

I’m in the same boat as you (same age too). I’m planning on reading (I’m getting through Meditations by Marcus Aurelius now) and prepping for when this blows over— because it will. I’ll improve my cardio, cook new recipes, and journal too. Hope this gave you some ideas.

My life’s been going fairly well on the whole (not significantly better or worse than when I was talking with her). I just hate having to wrap my head around the way she interprets the world and people. Also great analogy... I never really understood why people say, “If you want loyalty, get a dog.” Like I get it, but at the end of the day the dog is loyal because of the way it is treated and fed. As far as the relationship goes, I’ll probably give it a try & back off if it starts costing me too…

I’ve been M.I.A from contact with her as you were. I have to say, my life has still been solid, ups & downs for sure, but I’m content for the most part. It’s good to know that I can always stop talking to her if it starts costing me too much. Appreciate the perspective.

I agree with most of what you are saying. Being a man in a social setting is taxing. Constantly adjusting to others while mitigating and controlling your own emotions to a) get what you want from the situation and b) protect yourself from appearing vulnerable— even though everyone is vulnerable. This is why I have very few friends that I confide in.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
