While I agree with all of this, something to add is taking up a Martial Art. Self-Defense is never a bad skill to have and you can build awesome camaraderie with the dudes you train with. Also it's a great form of competition, along with cardio.
No sense in trying to change others; they won’t change unless they really want to. Let people fall on their face..experience teaches us better than any advice.
