Older men did this ... on purpose. It's not just how society played out. (I mean that is part of it) But, think about the options of a true alpha? They can go around & fuck any & all bitches no problem. Even have multiple marriages & shit. With any age. I've seen 30-40-50-60-70 year old men with 18-25 year old girls all day.
