We could answer this question once and for all with a few volunteers and a browser extension that could switch randomly (but be consistent inside conversations )between 3 accounts, 2 gendered and one neutral. Enough so that they were surprised by your story. Also it makes sense for people to be skeptical after they feel misled (bite me once).
