Am I obligated to whip out the rolodex open my contacts list and scour for a potential hookup for someone I met 30 seconds ago? Better?

Some people genuinely just want to chat. Sorry if that's a hard concept.

I think she means she wants to eventually meet more guys to be friends with, not to upgrade her male friendships into sexual relationships. Easy error over text.

A semester at home busting your ass at a demanding job goes a long way. I took a semester off for other reasons (related to health and a family situation) and pulled insane workweeks at my father's behest, even though we were comfortable. Came back to school ten times the student I was before, and a thousand times more grateful for his financial help.

I object. A couple with views so greatly at odds are bound to start to resent each other eventually. I'd be worried about a toxic environment beginning to form which could ultimately negatively impact the child. Additionally, if I had daughters, I would want a man who would highly value their education and motivate them to be the most kick-ass version of whatever they want to be, instead of viewing them as inevitable whores or constraining them within an AWALT framework. And if I had sons, I wou…

Mostly blue, I suppose, but with some stipulations. My blueness is a result of my lived experience and personality. I'm introverted and introspective, value my independence greatly, highly prioritize my budding career in academia, and desire a mate who will respect that and foster that. I consider all of that to be better championed by non-redpill frames of thought.

What if he has sex down the road with someone else? Still cheating? Or what if someone's spouse passes away, leaves, or is abusive, causing the individual to leave, and they decide one day to have sex? It seems that in order to cheat, there has to be an understanding on the parameters of when sex can occur. If those parameters no longer apply since the relationship "contract" has been shattered, why can't one move on without being denigrated as a cheater?

Any girl that didn't stay with her first boyfriend for life has effectively cheated on him and is not monogamous. I'd really love to hear your rationale for this.

I am thousands and thousands of miles away from my man right now as I finish up an academic program in the Middle East, so I fantasize about him frequently. I think about everything, from the mundane to the glamorous. About waking up next to him reading as the sun filters through our blinds and illuminates his face, about making dinner together after playing grab-ass in the grocery store, the feeling of seeing him at the airport, the way he plays the drums, the way his skin smells, how we got al…

I'd like to know around when things are starting to get serious and we start doing mundane life things together instead of just dates. If he wants to tell me before that point, that's cool too. However, this is only something I fully expect if it is likely to have an effect on our relationship. If not and he wants to keep it to himself, that's his prerogative. And the answer to the second is, kind of. I had a horrible day at work with multiple fatalities and alerted the guy I had been casually s…

Nonsense. I've known (and date) men who are confident and secure enough in their masculinity to not fall for the RP trap. Confident enough to know that being on the side of the feminist cause does not equal deprecating himself or the erosion of his identity. It comes down to truly getting to know a man. Sure, sometimes my initial reading of a guy isn't accurate, but eventually that becomes apparent and I can proceed accordingly.

I fail to see the logic in why you connect people getting upset about an admittedly antagonistic claim with evidence of them being wrong. Just because people got upset in the 1960s about the pushback against the Civil Rights Movement doesn't mean that America was afrocentric. Strong, antagonistic statements often elicit a visceral or emotional response in many people- doesn't mean that they're wrong. Also, it's not quite accurate to say that people who espouse these views only effect themselves-…

This post has a troll-y scent to it, but here goes. I date men who demonstrate to me that they are willing to treat me as an equal, not as a flesh hole. I date men who stimulate me intellectually, hence my nerdy af relationship that all started when he asked me if I wanted to talk about fossils and carbon dating. I also date men who are independent and not clingy, and will not date a man who has an overly idealized and perfected image of me in his head when in fact I'm only human. Healthy lifest…

I've seen it come up on r/Askwomen and among my IRL friends a few times. See, I myself am pretty short, measuring in just shy of 5'3". I do prefer my potential suitors be at least as tall as me, but at my height, that's the majority of men anyway. Ideally, I like men just a few inches taller- my last ex, for example, was very insecure about being "only" 5'6 or so, when I didn't give a fuck. I think part of it is an eye-contact thing for me. They also didn't have other viable choices a century ago. Honestly, I love to mix up my routine by throwing on a skirt every now and again, and I tend to lounge around my house in a t-shirt dress. Wearing a pencil skirt when out and about boosts my confidence at least 10%, and when I was a kiddo, I was the tomboy beating up the neighborhood dudes while wearing a dress. They are cute and can be comfortable/freeing in some styles, but the fact of the matter is... they just simply aren't practical …

What makes me interesting? Whatever, I'll bite. Firefighters I seriously LOL'd. I've been in Fire/EMS long enough to recognize it as one of the biggest hiveminds you can find... not to mention the extremely limited upward mobility, the low pay, and the fact that people literally line up to do our jobs for free. I quite agree. A good friendship is a two-way street. Both parties have to put in the effort and behave gracefully (which involves refusing to engage in certain iffy behaviors) or else it becomes parasitic. I'm sure if I did something shitty like date my best friend's abusive ex or trash talk her on social media she'd react negatively towards me, too. So in the name of keeping a good relationship, I try to think before I act. Good friends like her don't come along every day, and I think the reas…

I find it comes down to the quality of the friends you choose. I don't have many friends, but the ones I do have are ride or die. I hear about some of the bombastic falling-outs, backstabbery, or toxic friendships that some women have and I think to myself, what the fuck? Why bother being the friend of such a selfish asshole? Call me lucky, but I honestly can't relate. Of course I had the usual dose of shitty high school behavior, but that's just part of growing up and developing social skills. …

I get the feeling that most women don't really want to be friends with the men who approach them romantically and fail. Well... it's more nuanced than that. If a man with whom I've been good friends with for a long time or a man frequently in my social group approaches me romantically, I'm not going to cut him off because of it. I value my friendships highly, and unless the guy can't catch a hint and leave me alone after I ask, I see no reason why we shouldn't be friends. This happened between m…

Where does the majority of your time go on the job? Good question... the answer is, it depends on where you work. My current squad is in a busy coastal city, so it's not unusual for us to get slammed with over 10-15 calls over a 12 hour shift, which leaves little downtime. Most of those calls are pants-on-head stupid, though... think drunks, fake psychiatric calls, and vomiting. What do you do for work? Currently I'm an EMT with a busy urban FD. The pay is shit and the burnout high, however, so it is ultimately no career. But! It may vary by environment. I'm a nerdy academic who largely is around nerdy academics. I also date a fellow nerdy academic, and started dating him because his particular strain of nerdy academia was one I quite fancied and have an interest in myself. My SO and I started dating because of our shared intellectual interests. We had bumped into each other before, but were not on each other's radar until it was revealed that we both were obsessed with the same academic field and idolized the same authors. I have to agree. Modern guidelines and sensibilities have been tacked on to a "system" that is now largely obsolete, and now people get massively screwed as a result... and when it comes to custody, it's largely the father who gets the shaft.

Look, I thoroughly agree with the statement "not all men." Hell, I firmly state "not even the vast majority of men." As you see, I called it a dangerous stereotype. But holy shit, why hijack? Why pull a Kanye when I'm trying to convey a fear based in personal experience? I worked through that fear years ago, but it left me with the realization that if I asserted myself and said no, I could end up gravely punished for it. And that is why some of us tend to demur, even though I'm bolder than ever.

Heh. Me too. But! I'm interested in the comparison of potential violent reaction to rejection to divorce-rape. Shouldn't frequency play into this at all? The average amount of marriages per American is still less than 2. So, forseeably, the average man might only run the risk of divorce-rape one or two times in his life. On the other hand, a moderately attractive woman is going to be propositioned probably more than 2 times per year starting in high school and continuing into her thirties. Just …

I suppose it's feasible that it applies to dating in mainstream circumstances. As far as other things go: "easy" is so ambiguous though since there are so many variables that go into having an easy life. I'd argue that family conditions, socioeconomic status, and in some circumstances, race and geographical location, are better predictors of life being "easy" than just gender. A person is not defined by merely one trait alone. Sure, I'm a woman, but I'm also a white woman, an American, a white A…

No need to be condescending. In no place did I say that men shouldn't approach women; I merely highlighted why some women are afraid to be blunt or are skittish around men. A valid concern, no? And perhaps a bit of useful information to keep in mind when trying to approach women in a non-creepy manner. Also, I pursued my SO when we first started dating. The mean/median IQs tend to be around the same, but the distribution curves themselves are different. So, more women are within a standard deviation of the mean than men are and thus less above, but there are also more men below the mean than women below the mean. It works out. Also, it is interesting to note that female IQs have been rising at a much faster rate than male IQs when compared to older studies; the same is true in developing nations. To say their interpretation is too binary and simplistic would be an understatement. In reality culture is fluid and dynamic; actions and rituals (including bargoing) just can't fit into boxes. Going to bar = looking for sex is not an accurate summation. Sure, some people do go to bars purely to hook up, but I'd wager that that is not most people all the time. First of all, it would be a pretty good thing in the sense that pimps would have reduced influence, human trafficking would be more in check, fewer tax dollars would be spent on arresting, prosecuting, and incarcerating sex workers just trying to get by, and sex workers could enjoy safer livelihoods and operate in the clear/not fear going to law enforcement for help in a dangerous situation. Not in depth. I suppose you are referring to your characterizing medicine as a non-productive field? Or as one that doesn't contribute much economically? On the contrary. Medical professionals keep people in good physical health so that they may continue to work and contribute to the economy, and stop the spread of disease that would otherwise cause more health-related work absences in all sectors. I know my SO keeps a journal, and I'm fairly certain he knows that I do, too. I'd never go spelunking around in that- the inner mind of a person is something almost sacred and should not be penetrated. One time I inadvertently opened his journal because I thought it was his planner, and immediately recoiled when I realized it was actually a collection of his thoughts. I'm all about transparency and communication in a relationship, but the inner stream of consciousness is something I won't intrud…

Long-term compatibility is something I consider before getting sexually involved after I found that casual sex was not my jam. To be compatible, he has to have a particular attitude toward academic work: the more passionate about his field, the better, and he must respect my field as valid, as well. I prefer fellow introverts, someone I can feel just as comfortable spending a few quite hours with reading side by side in silence as I do when we are conversing. The ability to take care of his phys…

I don't give a flying fuck. Sure there is going to be some assfuck who abuses that and goes in all "ohhhh I'm trans" just to be a peeping tom, but that's probably going to be an extreme rarity. I'm sure pedos into young boys already ogle at kids in male restrooms, and I'm sure that if someone notices, action is taken. Same will probably go for men who claim to be trans just to use a women's room and commence ogling.

Most of my male friends are in relationships or don't prefer casual sex. I guess my one buddy hooked up with someone earlier this month, and another has been casually boinking this chick on and off since March... that's all I know off the top of my head. I'm not going to ask everyone I know! That's fucked up, and really uncouth.

I've found myself attracted to a variety of bodies, but the one absolute constant is my dislike for defined abs- I appreciate the hard work it takes to get them, but they simply make me think of the belly of a lobster. Flat tummies are nice though, but I like just a wee bit of padding with it. The only image I could find at the moment is this picture of Chris Pratt with a step-up from the dad bod. Even then he's a little big, (traps) but has a nice tummy/shoulders. My current SO is somewhat acti…

which is a last-resort contingency plan for the unlikely event that shit hits the fan so badly we need to start siphoning off civilians that has nothing to do with reproduction (I think we learned that lesson in Vietnam) I should have phrased it better. The draft is what doesn't have to do with reproduction. I added the parenthetical about Vietnam afterwards and it messed things up, I guess. Military draft and childbirth are just separate spheres. They don't have to do with each other.

Ach, poor phrasing. Vietnam was a draft clusterfuck that led thousands to flee the country to avoid getting conscripted into an expensive, deadly shit-show of a war that many people vehemently opposed. I'm hoping that our mistakes there have at least taught us a lesson about misusing the draft for a war that had little to do with our own national security. These days we actually turn people away from the military even while at war and have the technology for remote combat requiring fewer boots o…

What would killing 60 million male infants do to correct the already existing injustice of female infanticide? While I don't agree with the premise of a draft for a nation already facing a personnel surplus, it's not infringing upon human rights the way that infanticide does. Eradicating the draft would be ideal, yes, but why not take the burden off of millions of people by sharing the load a little? If we extended it to women, then single fathers wouldn't have to leave their children for milita…

You're edging towards a reductio ad absurdum here with the genital mutilation thing, and I'm not even going to touch the assumption that the military or national defense is by necessity a male responsibility, I just simply don't have the energy right now. Again, childbirth and military service are apples and oranges. I could see your argument potentially holding water if the government mandated that women produce a quota of children or sign up to be brood mares the way that men must sign up to b…

What does this have to do with childbirth? I'm stating that when it comes to the draft, men bear a disproportionate onus for national security, which is not only unfair but a potential strategic detriment. With a draft that includes women, men who would serve the country more effectively at home would not be wasted on the front lines.

I'm a massive fan of feminist theorists like Sherry Ortner (Making Gender is a goodie) and Lila Abu-Lughod (Writing Women's Worlds is a favorite ethnography of mine), specifically because they have very solid arguments paired with theoretical backup and real-world examples, and have been through rigorous peer-review processes. These two narratives are not incompatible in any way. The incongruences arise when people have an either/or mentality or fall for the vitriol of ideologues. I don't see this happening…
