I was in a similar situation before I got into a relationship. For me creating the habit of cold approaching is a great skill to develop. It’ll help you in social situations in general, including the dates you get from apps. Clubs are scams. Bars are okay with friends, and I didn’t go out just for day game. I’d move on with my life, and if I saw a hottie on some social situation I’d approach.

I don’t find overweight women attractive. For the women I have dated, I think makeup didn’t make that much difference, maybe because I was (am) clueless about it. Improving yourself basically helps in self confidence and in feeling comfortable in your on skin. But to pick up women you still have to be proactive. Women will rarely throw themselves at you. This same stuff happened to me a couple times, typically they were European. At first, I thought this was weird because you're giving out more info. However, I actually asked two of my dates why they added me on facebook rather them giving me their number - obviously, I only asked this when they were feeling more comfortable with me. They said that they prefer social media because they can more easily block you, if you turn out to be a freak.
