Of course combat deaths are going to be higher for men than women. Women have been barred from serving in many front line roles historically. It's going to take a long time to address this, to encourage more women to be actually able to apply, get enlisted and then hopefully die in a similar rate to men do in combat.

Better to call - its something that can't be ignored as easily as a text which only blips a few times and isn't as pressing as a calls ringtone. Also if she doesn't answer - don't leave a voicemail, it'll leave her wondering why you called, and she'll have something to talk to you about if she calls back.
