Most likely nothing you do while married will protect your assets. 3	Susanna Coetzee, was sentenced to 127 days in jail after pleading guilty today to trying to extort $15,000 from a man she met online and falsely reporting that he raped her. Aside from criminal prosecution, this guy has a really good defamation law suit. She could be paying this man monetary damages for the rest of her life. At ages 18 and up the child is supposed to get the money directly because they are legally competent. The only reason the mother gets the child support when they are young is because she is supposed to act in their best interest since they cannot (legally incompetent). Family law is not my specialty and it varies from state to state, but as I understand it, adoption terminates the natural parents rights and obligations completely. Child support does directly go to the welfare of the child and must only be used for that purpose. It cannot be contracted away. The biggest reason some states continue support past 18 is to make sure both parents are contributing to college expenses. On the other hand, alimony is spousal maintenance and is good for as long as 10 years at a time, subject to renewal at the end of the ten years.
