3	No, Hope Solo Is Not 'Like' Ray Rice It seems as though the writer (Coates) prefers what is called 'substantive equality' over formal equality. I learned of these two terms from a video posted to this subreddit a few months back. He thinks that because there is 'history' of a particular injustice (men beating women), it should be punished much harder today than a woman who commits a similar assault.
