The overwhelming majority of states (if not all) view child support as sustaining the 'standard of living' the child had before the separation. Regarding assets -- It could be different in Canada but in the states they don't care about your assets so much. Just your gross income. Assets are a bigger factor in division of property in divorce proceedings, which doesn't apply here. There are other things you can do to reclaim some of the money. One example is claiming a dependent on income taxes. If you get that established in your favor you get quite a bit of money back. Also once you have a dependent on your taxes you can write off daycare expenses, getting more money back. I'm also in the US so this may not apply to Canada but the thought behind child support is to cover the cost of rearing a child, not to fund a piggy bank for when they each legal age. If you're under 18 you need a "custodian" to oversee disbursement of payments which, inherently, is the CP (custodial parent). If you want to protect your assets do not marry her.
