I would add that irony's current modern form is a fairly recent arrival. 18th century? As a concept, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Used to deconstruct ideas or address cognitive dissonance, it's an amazing sleight; hey, this thing is supposed to be that way, and yet it isn't Unfortunately, the barbarous snark that the article is addressing is the cultural malignancy that we're left with; nothing matters, only the naive care.
