What I have found in my old age (mid 40s) is that you will have a very small group of people who you can count on no matter what. Most of society is driven by instant gratification, the social climate of the moment, and what the media tells them. Your advice is solid. I paid for college working in industrial maintenance. This isn't a bad plan. My employer even reimbursed for classes which were relevant to my job, so roughly 1/2 of them. It took nearly a decade, but I made a middle class living while graduating without debt. Now, at 43, I can afford to pay for classes outright and when I'm done in a few years, I will transition into a career as a psychologist for the rest of my working years.

They're fun with a live axle and manual trans. You actually steer with the throttle a lot more than you would anticipate. I did Sam Strano's recommended suspension setup and it was hilarious.
